Some progress – modest, admittedly – has now been made on this, thanks to a little further exploration of what can be done in FrontPage.
It does offer some general feedback templates which include radio buttons, and these can be assigned to groups so that only one in each set can be selected when voting. In plain English, that means when you are given a number of choices to answer one question you can only select one answer, and we can have as many questions as we wish.
Below these are a couple of fields for entering name and email address, and finally a SUBMIT button.
That leaves a number of issues to address:
1) Formatting the SUBMIT button so it generates a results file in .txt format which I can retrieve. By default it generates this file – I just don’t know how to ensure it reaches me.
2) Presentation. More to the point, as things stand there’s a choice between having every crossword poll on a single webpage or having a separate page for each poll. The former is preferable; my concern is that every single voting button (25 of them for each crossword) must be individually formatted so that it falls into a unique group. At the moment the prospect of this looks distinctly like a pain in the bottom.
3) Unique votes, i.e. ensuring that you can only vote once for each puzzle. I can’t see anything that allows this to be set up.
4) Making results visible would appear to be limited to me picking the results up (back to point 1) and publishing them. I’d much prefer results to be instantly accessible but, again, am at a loss to see how it can be done.
So there’s a fair bit of work to do before this concept can see the light of day at the start of 2009. Talking to a few people with at least some html knowledge, it would appear that a minimum requirement may be to have the whole shebang running on my own server.
Er – that’s expensive isn’t it? _________________ Start every day with a smile and get it over with. |
