Pieces Of A Puzzle
Summary - 2 years ago, Nora and George died in a terrible accident, leaving Lizzie, Edwin, Marti and their new daughter Aly, to Derek and Casey. Now, Derek and Casey have finally put the pieces of their broken family back together, when a shocking suprise threatens to tear apart the puzzle they worked so hard to build. Can they get through this together, or will they tear each other apart.....?
Disclaimer: I do not own Life With Derek or any of it's characters. I also do not own the song A Day In The Life by Lindsay Lohan from the Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen soundtrack.
Warning: Rated T for Teen for sexual content and language in later chapters. And because I'm paranoid.
Pieces Of A Puzzle
Chapter One: A Day In The Life (Introduction)
'Cause nothing ever changes anymore,
Makes me wonder what tomorrow's for.
-Lindsay Lohan, A Day In The Life.
A small child's cries filled the McDonald-Venturi residence. In their bed, Casey McDonald weakly slapped her boyfriend's arm. ''Your turn.'' She mumbled.
''No, your turn,'' his response was muffled, as he buried his face in his pillow. ''I got her last time.''
''Ugh, fine.'' Casey pulled herself out of bed and slipped her robe on. She blinked sleep from her eyes as she put her hand on the doorknob.
''Just so you know,'' she turned to throw a mischevious smile at him. ''You will pay for this.''
Derek Venturi's eyes flew open and a goofy grin spread across his face.
''Be still my heart.''
--00--
Casey, still half asleep, pulled the door open and crept in quietly.
The little curly blonde girl was standing up in her bed, rubbing her eyes furiously. ''Up.'' She sniffled , thrusting her arms up to Casey.
With ease, Casey scooped her up and settled her on her hip. ''What's wrong, Aly?''
''Bad dream.'' Aly rested her head on Casey's shoulder and put her thumb in her mouth.
Casey reached out and removed the small girl's thumb from her mouth. ''Uh-uh, honey, you're a big girl now, and big girl's don't suck their thumbs.''
Aly whimpered pathetically and her lip quivered.
Casey sighed, rolling her eyes. ''Okay, you can sleep in our bed. But only for one more night, okay?''
Aly nodded, with a smile. ''Okay!''
''You are such a push over!'' A voice said.
Casey gasped, turning around and narrowing her eyes. ''Am not!''
''Oh, you know you are too.'' Derek stood, leaning against the door, his arms crossed, his infamous smirk plastered on his face.
She rolled her eyes, moving over to him. ''Maybe I am.'' She leaned up and kissed him.
His hands went instantly to the small of her back and he deepened the kiss.
She pulled away, leaving them both wanting more. ''But you love it.'' She finished, smiling and walking past him, with Aly giggling.
''Wait a minute,'' he ran after her and into their room, grabbing her arm and spinning her around. ''That was mean.''
She smiled sweetly and put Aly on the bed. She wrapped her arms around his neck. ''And that wasn't even your punishment.''
''Must you torture me?''
''I'm afraid I must.''
''Hmm.'' Derek leaned down and captured her lips in a kiss, just as a small giggle escaped Aly's lips. Casey pulled away, laughing silently, and Derek groaned. ''Go to sleep, Alyson.''
Casey grinned and slipped into bed.
''What? No, she'll go to sleep.'' Derek moaned. ''Come on, baby, you're killing me.''
''Just get in bed, honey.''
Derek grumbled, but got in bed next to Aly.
Casey looked over the sleeping toddler. ''Tomorrow you pay.''
--00--
Their alarm clocks went off at the same time, and they both rolled over to hit the snooze button, but ended up rolling off the bed.
''We have to get a bigger bed.'' Derek muttered, standing.
''Baby, we can't afford a bigger bed.'' Casey snorted, as she arranged pillows around Aly to keep her from falling off the bed.
''Okay, but we need one.''
''So, what do you suggest we do? Take extra shifts at Smelly Nelly's. I don't think so.''
''Case, we fall off the bed every morning.''
''Not every morning.'' She protested. ''Just the morning's when Aly sleeps with us.''
''Yeah, that's every morning.''
Casey resisted the urge to roll her eyes and started out the door. ''I'm going to take a shower.'' She paused and turned around, grinning devilishly.
''Care to join me?''
--00--
''Okay, we took waaay too long in the shower.'' Casey muttered, trying to wrestle a half asleep Aly into her clothes.
''Yeah, but it was worth it.'' Derek said, with a smirk, as he fastened his watch onto his wrist.
Casey smiled softly and settled Aly on her hip. ''Alright, you wake up Edwin and Marti and I'll wake up Lizzie and start breakfast.''
''Oh, sure, you get the easy one.''
''Hey, Lizzie has not been easy to wake up since she turned 15.'' Casey countered.
''Okay, okay, I'll wake up Edwin and Marti.''
--00--
''Ed, get up.'' Derek burst into Edwin's room and put his hands on his hips.
''Too early.'' Edwin moaned, putting a pillow over his head.
''Too bad.'' Derek grabbed Edwin's comforter and threw the pillow and blanket in the corner. He leaned down next to Edwin. ''Get up!''
Edwin shot up and groaned. ''Jesus, Derek.''
''Oh, quit your bitching and get ready for school.'' Derek closed the door and moved to Marti's room.
''Smarti,'' he leaned against the doorway and crossed his arms, looking at the sleeping girl in the bed. Marti had changed in the two years since Nora and George had died. She wasn't as bright and crazy as she used to be. Her hair was a shade darker, almost black now. Sometimes he wasn't even sure if his Smarti was still in there. ''Time to get up.''
Marti slid under the covers. ''But I don't wanna.''
''Come on, Smarti.'' He entered the room and sat on the bed, rubbing her back. ''Fourth grade isn't that bad.''
''Yes it is.''
Derek sighed slightly, but then smirked. ''Okay, well, then, if you don't like fourth grade, how about going back to third?''
Marti sighed and stuck her head out from under the covers. ''I'm up.''
--00--
As soon as Derek entered the kicthen, his jaw dropped. Casey had Aly on her hip and was trying to flip pancakes and stop Aly from eating her hair, as the small girl sang loudly.
Lizzie was asleep on the counter, her head on the counter as she snored slightly.
Edwin and Marti were fighting over the orange juice, both pulling at it and yelling loudly.
''Hey!''
Lizzie's head shot up and she looked around wildly, through bleary eyes, wiping drool from her face.
Edwin and Marti dropped thr juice, their mouths dropping open.
And Aly grinned, chewing on her hair, her loud singing stopping.
Derek nodded. ''That's better.''
''Thanks.'' Casey breathed, pausing flipping pancakes to swallow a few aspirin.
''No problem. Besides, they listen to me.'' He smirked and leaned against the counter, grabbing a pancake and taking a bite out of it.
Casey rolled her eyes and tried to get the pancakes onto a plate. ''Take Aly for a minute.'' She shifted Aly into Derek's arms and flipped the pancakes onto a plate. ''Eat fast, we're gonna be late.'' She ordered, placing them infront of the kids.
Aly whimpered, and buried her face in Derek's shoulder. ''No, go.''
Derek and Casey looked at each other, before he carefully handed Aly to Lizzie, and grabbed Casey's arm, dragging her into the living room, leaving Edwin and Lizzie to deal with a whimpering Aly and a very thirsty Marti.
--00--
''Derek,'' Casey started with a small smile, ''we can't keep taking Aly to daycare, she's too young.'' She glanced over his shoulder making sure the kids couldn't hear.
''I know, Sweetie.'' Derek sat down on the couch and put his head in his hands, tiredly. ''But what are we supposed to do? Drop out of school? I mean,'' he looked up at her, ''two years ago, that might have been an option, but with Dad and Nora gone, we need to work really hard to get scholarships if we even want to think about getting into college.''
She raked a hand through her hair and started to pace. ''It's just, she hates it there. She doesn't have friends. She's small for her age, they pick on her, Derek.'' Tears glistened in her blue eyes and she sank next to him. He wrapped an arm around her and pulled her to him, kissing her on the head.
''I know.'' He paused for a minute. ''We have to come up with another arrangement. But not today. We don't have time.''
''I just worry about her.''
''Well, you're you, of course you worry, worrying is what you do best.'' He added with a smirk.
She slapped his arm, with a grin. ''Derek, be serious. She was in a traumatic event when she was just three months old, you know the nightmares she has.''
Derek sighed and glanced into the kitchen where Aly was smiling and laughing with Lizzie. ''I know.''
--00--
''Okay, guys, get your stuff and get out to the car.'' Casey ordered, as she and Derek came back into the kitchen.
''No, go?'' Aly asked, her voice hopeful.
''Come on, Marti, let's go.'' Edwin said gently, pulling on the younger girl's arm.
''Yeah, we'll just, we'll be in the car.'' Lizzie added, with a gentle smile in Aly's dirention. ''See you in the car, Aly.'' She brushed a kiss to the toddler's head and gave both Derek and Casey a chaste kiss on the cheek, whispering a 'good luck.'
''Okay, Sweetie, listen,'' Casey put Aly on the counter and grabbed her hands. ''We know you don't like daycare, but you have to go, at least for today, okay? Can you do that for me? Just for today?''
Aly hid her face in her stuffed bear. ''No.''
''Aly.'' Derek said firmly, stepping in front of her. ''We know you don't like it there, but for today, you don't have a choice. You have to go. We have to go to school and Lizzie and Edwin have to go, too, alright? So, can you be a big girl for me and do this one thing?''
Aly looked up from her stuffed bear. ''Okay.'' She sniffled, reaching out and wrapping her arms around his neck. ''I love you, Daddy.'' She whispered, so no one except Derek could hear her.
There was a moment of panic. When his heart sped up and his chest closed up, his breathing quickening. But as quick as it came, it was gone, replaced by a feeling of peace. ''I love you too, Aly.'' Derek put her on the ground and looked at Casey. ''See? I'm her favorite.''
Casey rolled her eyes, but a smile tugged at the corner of her lips. ''Okay baby-girl, do you want to take Mr. Sprinkles?''
''No!' Derek burst out.
''Yes.'' Aly threw him a glare and hugged her bear to her chest proectivly.
''Okay.'' Casey laughed. ''Go and get your backpack, and hurry, we're running late.''
''Kay.'' As soon as Aly was out of the room, Derek turned to Casey.
''A teddy bear? If you're so worried about kids picking on her, maybe you shouldn't let her take a teddy bear to school.'' He was dangerously close to stomping his foot like a child, but he would not give her the satisfaction.
''Derek,'' she found it increasingly hard to keep the smile off her face. ''She's two.''
''Yeah, but...but...''
''But what?'' She raised an eyebrow as she grabbed her bags.
''But....''
''You got nothing.'' She leaned up to kiss him, just as Aly ran back into the room.
''Ready!''
''We really need to look into getting a bell for around her neck.'' Derek groaned.
Casey laughed, shifting her bags on her shoulder. ''Okay, baby-girl, let's go.'' Casey took her hand and started for the door. As soon as the door was open, Aly was off and running to the car, screaming ''Lizzie! Eddie! Smarti!''
Casey put her bags down and turned to lock the door.
Derek shook his head. ''That is one spastic two-year old.''
''She get's that from your side of the family.''
''Ha! You wish.''
She smiled and leaned up, finally kissing him with no inturruptions. Until.. ''Hey, um, what did she say to you?''
She was hovering just above his lips and Derek found it hard to concentrate on what she was saying. ''Hmm?''
Casey pulled away, and grabbed her bags. ''Aly. What did she say in there? You looked like you were having trouble breathing for a minute.''
''Oh, um,'' Derek looked over at the car, and at the small girl laughing with the older kids. ''It was....It was nothing.''

It's a day in the life, it's a link in the chain,
Beginning, the end, they both look the same, round and round,
No new ground, it's a day in the life, and we're down to the game,
Winning or losing, there's nothing new to the game, round and round,
No new ground,
It's a day in the life.
-Lindasy Lohan, A Day In The Life
end chapter one_____________________________________________________________
AN: Okay, well first off, I'd like to say that this story is the first part in the 'Pieces' trilogy, and it will have, well, three stories, obviously and all of them will have the word 'pieces' in the title. I'm also thinking about doing a prequel that's about how they lost their parents and got together. Okay, moving on, this chapter was really hard for me - whis is why it's not the best - because I wanted their life to be adult and mature, but they're still only 18, so I had to encorporate something in there, which is where the 'shower' thing came in, and the rolling off the bed, and the way Derek woke Edwin up. Now, I know, Derek and Casey may seem a little OOC, but think of it this way: they lost their parents, they inherited four kids, they had to raise a baby, they found their way to each other and they bascially had to grow up, really, really, fast. I mean, not only were they instant parents, but the kids they were parents to were troubled and grieving, and they had to find some way to grieve themselves. Phew! So, that's why they may not be the Derek and Casey we all know and love. But, hey, maybe they're even better.
Okay! Let's talk specifics. Let me just say that the 'your turn, no your turn' part was one of my favorite's and you'll find out why at the end of the story. Oh, and the scene in Aly's room kind of went out of my control with their banter. Oh, and the reason why Aly can talk so well, is because, well, that's how I wrote her. I hate writing baby talk, so just imagine her saying these things in like, a two-year old way.
Now, I'm sure some of you have noticed the pet names Derek and Casey have for each other, like 'Baby' and 'Sweetie' and I think 'Honey' was even in there. Lot's of fanfics I've seen have had them calling each other 'Baby', but I haven't seen alot of 'Honey's' or 'Sweetie's', and the reason I'm using them, is to show that their friends and family sort of see them as married, and they act married and they act like parents. And they've matured from the - let's be honest - selfish, teenager's they are now.
The Marti storyline with her not wanting to go to school will probably makes a comeback somewhere down the road, but I'm not sure yet, because I'm re-writing this and I'm changing alot.
The story with Aly not wanting to go to school won't be a major storyline.
And here it is, the 'I love you, Daddy.' Now, that part was so sugary sweet it made me want to cry...or vomit. Either one. But I had fun writing it. She's grown up around them. Derek and Casey are basically the only parents she's even known. So yes, the 'Mommy', 'Daddy' thing is going to play it's part.
Overall this chapter is just an introduction, showing what 'normal' is for them since Nora and George died. Personally I think 'normal' is overrated, but that may be because my family is dysfunctional.
Now, I have rambled on for long enough anf I'm sure some of you - if you're even reading this author's note - are going 'just shut up already' and I just want to say...you're going to have to get used to these long author's notes. This was the first Life With Derek fic I ever wrote and the second story I ever finished, so I'm going to be telling you the stories behind what I write, how I felt when I was writing it, and all that crap.
As for the story and any spoilers you might want, all I'm going to say, is buckle up, it's going to be one wild, emotional ride.
end author's note

No, you haven't asked that. But, not I haven't posted on FF.Net, I - I'm almost embarassed to admit this - don't know how to post on that site yet. I am a member though. I'm darkfairy72.
I also don't know how to make videos, or banners, or upload an avatar.
Man, that's pathetic.

Disclaimer: I do not own Life With Derek or any of it's characters. I also do not own the song All These Lives by Daughtry from his self-titled albumn.
Warning: Rated T for Teen for later chapters. And because I'm paranoid.
Chapter Two: All These Lives
They're gonna find you, just believe,
You're not a person; you're a disease
-Daughtry, All These Lives
Whispers, eyerolls, whistles, and catcalls reverberated through the halls as Derek grabbed Casey's arm, spinning her around and pressing her to the lockers, catching her lips with his own. He put his hands on the lockers, trapping her beneath him, and she gripped his shirt, pulling him closer and deepening the kiss, her heart beating wildly in her chest.
Casey pulled away, breathlessly. ''You know, Marti has a sleepover tonight, Lizzie and Edwin have dates, we get off work early, and, I think I can get the Davis's to watch Aly.''
''Ah, is this my punishment?'' He smirked.
''Actually,'' she tugged on his shirt, pulling him down within an inch of her lips. ''I was hoping it could be my punishment.'' She smiled devilishly and he sucked in a breath. ''You see, I've been a very bad girl.'' She pulled him down for a kiss and just as their lips were about to touch, an announcement came over the loud speaker.
''Casey McDonald and Derek Venturi please report to the principal's office.''
Murmurs spread throughout the halls.
''Well, that kind of ruins the moment.'' Derek said, raising an eyebrow.
Casey groaned and buried her face in his chest. She could feel him laughing silently and groaned again.
''Wow, you must really want me.'' He laughed, pulling her away from him gently.
She felt her face warm, and reached over, swatting him. ''Shut up.''
Derek laughed again, and pulled her to him, kissing her on the top of the head.
''So,'' she pulled away as they started down the hall. ''What'd you do now?''
''Beats me. I've been too busy all week to pull off any stunts.''
Casey grinned. ''Now, why don't I believe you?''
--00--
''Ah, Mr Venturi, Miss McDonald. Or is it Mrs Venturi yet?'' The secretary gave them a small smirk, looking up from her paperwork.
Casey rolled her eyes. ''Nope, not yet.''
Derek smiled charmingly, and leaned on the counter. ''Hey, Mary, what's the haps?''
The young redhead gave him a look. ''Paul has a message for you.''
''Aww, and here I thought we were connecting.''
''Goodbye, Mr Venturi.''
''Oh, come on, babe, why do you do this to me?''
Casey rolled her eyes again and tugged on the sleeve of Derek's leather jacket. ''De-rek! Come on.''
''Okay, but this isn't over. I'll be back.''
Mary smiled wryly, ''can't wait.''
As soon as they were out of the office, Casey shook her head. ''I will never understand your ways.''
''Charming is in my genes.'' Derek shrugged.
Casey gave him a look, but didn't say anything as she pulled open the door to Paul's office. She smiled brightly. ''Hey, Paul.''
''Paul, how're you doing?'' Derek asked, refraining from making a comment about his neurotic girlfriend.
Paul didn't smile. He grimly motioned for them to sit down and they did.
''Paul, what's going on?'' Casey asked nervously.
''Aly's school called.'' Paul said, quietly.
''Yeah, Aly didn't want to go to schoo today,'' Derek sighed and ran his hand over his face, ''what did she do?''
Paul swallowed hard. ''She fell down the stairs. She's, she's at the hospital.''
And at that moment, they swore, their hearts stopped.
--00--
Dodging stretchers and wheelchairs, Derek and Casey ran up to the front desk of the hospital, both out of breath.
''Hi, we're here for Alyson Venturi, is she alright?'' Casey breathed.
''Are you family?'' The nurse droned.
''We're her legal guardian's.'' Derek wrapped an arm around a shaking Casey's waist.
The nurse softened. ''She's upstairs in the children's ward. But you'll have to wait. She's in surgery.''
Casey gulped. ''Surgery?''
''Ma'am, I'm sorry, but the doctor's in the children's ward will know more. There's a waiting room there.'' She gave them a small sympathetic smile. ''Is there anyone you'd like me to call?''
Derek could already feel Casey's legs giving out as her weight shifted onto him. He gripped her tightly, holding her up. ''No thanks.'' He threw the nurse a small smile and gently pulled Casey away. ''Case,'' he sighed.
Her face was pale as she stared at the ground, tears filling the blue eyes he loved so much. She looked like she was about to pass out. Or throw up. Or both.
''Casey, look at me,'' Derek gently swept hair away from her face, touching her cheek.
''We-We shouldn't have made her go to school, Derek. This-This is our fault. If she had stayed home like she wanted, this wouldn't be happening.'' She babbled. She looked up at him, her eyes widening in horror. ''Oh, God, Derek, what if -''
''No, Casey, don't even say it. Aly will be fine.''
''You don't know that.''
''Of course I do.'' He smiled, softly, meeting her eyes. ''She's a Venturi.''
--00--
2 hours went by with no word on Aly. Derek and Casey now sat in the waiting room of the children's ward, with Edwin, Lizzie and Marti. Edwin and Lizzie had shown up with Marti and were trying to do all they could to keep the younger girl's mind off Aly.
Casey currently had her head on Derek's shoulder, and their hands were clasped. She was just drifting off when the doctor came out. Derek and Casey were the first one's to stand, the other's not far behind.
''How is she?'' Derek was the one to voice the burning question on everyone's minds.
The doctor glanced at the young couple, wondering if they were the girl's parents, but though better of asking. ''Alyson has a broken arm, a broken leg and a concussion. Some of the tissue in her shoulder was torn and that's why she had to operate.''
''Is she going to be okay?'' Casey managed through tears.
''Alyson's a very lucky girl. She took quite the fall.'' He smiled. ''She'll make a full recovery.''
Sighs of relief spread throuhgout the family. Lizzie pulled Marti into a hug as Edwin wrapped an arm around both of them. Casey turned and buried her face into Derek's shoulder, as he tangled a hand in her hair, closing his eyes and breathing in the comforting scent of her.
''Can we see her?'' Lizzie asked, pulling away from Marti, but keeping her close.
''Well, she's still a little groggy from the anastesia, so I wouldn't stay too long if I were you.''
Casey smiled through her tears. ''Thank you.''
The doctor nodded, before leaving the family alone.
Derek and Casey turned to the rest of the family. Casey pulled her sister in for a hug as Marti wrapped her arms around Derek. They shared a private family moment, before Lizzie sniffled and pulled away from Casey with a smile.
''Go.'' She ordered, gently.
''Are you sure, we could - ''
''Go!''
--00--
The two quietly entered Aly's room, shutting the door behind them.
As soon as Casey saw Aly, she gasped and her hands flew to her mouth.
''Casey,'' Derek sent her a look and put his hand on her shoulder, absenmindly, massaging her shoulder.
Aly's leg was in a cast, her arm was in a sling, she had a bandage around her head and she was incredibly pale.
They took seats on either side of her and they each grabbed one of her tiny hands.
Aly stirred and her eyes fluttered open. ''Mommy? Daddy?''
Casey tried to smile. ''Y-Yeah,'' she cleared her throat, ''yeah baby, it's us.''
Aly slowly became aware of her surroundings and she let out a small whimper. ''Where...me?''
''You're in the hospital, babe.'' Derek said, gently.
''You had an accident.'' Casey carefully stroked the little girl's limp blonde curls, careful not to hurt her. ''Do you remember?''
Aly nodded slowly. ''I fall.''
''Yeah, you did, hon.''
Derek looked at Casey. She looked more fragile then Aly. ''How do you feel?'' He asked, returning his attention to the little girl who needed him.
''Sleepy.''
''Okay, um, do you want us to come back later?'' Casey stood.
But Aly's eyes were already shutting.
--00--
As soon as they stepped out of the room, Casey sniffled and put her face in her hands.
''Casey, oh my, God, what's wrong? Is it Aly?'' Lizzie took a step towards her sister.
Derek could see Casey's small frame shaking with sobs, and he too, took a cautious step towards her. ''Baby?''
Casey lifted her head and looked around at her family. That was it. She couldn't take it anymore. And then she took off, running down the hall.
Derek didn't even think twice before going after her.

When he finally found her, she was sitting on the floor, her back pressed up against the wall, face in her hands, rocking back and forth.
''Casey.'' He paused and then shook his head, sitting next to her.
She immediatly turned into his chest, her body wracking with sobs. He had long ago gotten over his irrational fear of tears and wrapped an arm around her.
He didn't need to do much to comfort her. Just hold her. She could feel his heartbeat as she laid her head against his chest, and it calmed her. She didn't know what it was about him. But he could always calm her. It was strange really. Half the time, he was the one making her angry. But he was always, always the one to calm her down. When she finished sobbing, she pulled away, her eyes red and puffy. ''Sorry about your shirt.''
He cupped her face. ''I've got others. I'm more worried about you.''
She sighed and leaned back against the wall, turning her head to face him. ''We could have lost her.'' Shw whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears.
''But we didn't.''
''But we could have.''
''Case, Aly's fine. You heard the doctor. She should make a full recovery.'' He paused. ''What's this really about?''
She looked at him sharply. ''What?''
''Casey, I know you better then you know yourself sometimes, what is this really about? It's not about Aly.''
''Yes it is!''
''Okay, but maybe it's not about the accident.''
''It is.'' She protestes. ''It just brings back memories of when...Mom and George...when they....''
He looked down. ''I know.'' He looked back up at her. ''But, maybe it's not about that either. Maybe it's about...what she called you.''
She closed her eyes briefly, willing a sigh away. ''She called me Mommy, Derek, you can say it.''
''Casey, you knew there was a chance she was going to start calling us Mommy and Daddy, we've raised her since she was three months old, we're the only parents she's ever known.''
Casey frowned and looked at him. ''She called you Daddy.''
''What?''
''This morning. She called you Daddy, didn't she? That's what she said.''
''Casey, this isn't about me.''
''Yes it...''She broke off and blew out a sigh. ''No, it's not'' she looked at her hands. ''It just, just seems so, so, real now.''
''Yeah,'' Derek smirked. ''Who would've thought we'd become instant parents at 16.'' He laughed.
''Emily.''
''What?'' He stopped laughing and turned to her.
''Well, maybe not at 16, but yeah, she always thought we had sexual tension. Even when she had a crush on you. She thoughy we'd get married and have kids.'' She paused, with a laugh. ''Well, she's half right.''
''Hey,'' he lifted her chin. ''She's all right. Someday, I am going to marry you Casey McDonald.''
She smiled and leaned up, kissing him. After a minute, she pulled away and manuevered herself onto his lap, wrapping her arms around his neck. ''And someday, I'm going to marry you, Derek Venturi.''
He laughed. ''Good to know.''

end chapter two_____________________________________________________________
AN: Okay, I jus want to start off by saying, I wrote this chapter in a hurry, and I'm not sure I like how it turned out, but it'll do.
The locked make-out session/'I've been a very bad girl' was to give you a feel of the old Derek and the new not-as-innocent Casey, aside from what they are at home. You know, ''Mom'' and ''Dad'' Casey and Derek. The whispers and murmurs come from what I think will happen when they get together. (Notice I say when and not if) I mean, they are step-siblings and they do act like they hate each other (even though it'd be hard not to see the U.S.T) so I think when they get together, their relashonship will be talked about. Right?
The whole thing with the secretary had been in my head forever and was also my way of writing myself into the story. Although my name isn't Mary and in my dreams would Michael Seater flirt with me, I do have red hair.
Now, the decsion to put Aly in the hospital was a hard one to make, but it was to show that even though their life may seem like the kind the women on Wisteria Lane dream of, they do have their fair share of drama and problems.
When I wrote how Casey and Derek reacted to the accident I originally thought I had overdone it a little, but then I realized that it was the right way. They've raised her. She's their baby. They reacted like scared parents.
I really don't know alot of 'medical speak' but compared to some of my earlier drafts I think I did okay.
Once again, I hate writing baby talk, so again, just imagine her talking like a two-year old.
I'm not really sure why I chose this particulat song, but it just seemed to....fit.
And here it is, my favorite part. The part where Derek confronts Casey in the hall. It was, by far, one of the most emotional scenes I have ever written, and I think I did pretty good. I lovd how I wrote Derek. I didn't realize it, until I read it again, but I love, love, LOVE, how I wrote him and how he got over his 'irrational fear of tears'. You may think Casey overracted about when Aly called her Mommy, but I don't think so. She's acted like a mother for 2 years, but actually being called Mommy is alot different. Like she said, it makes it more real. And the Emily knowing thing, well, I don't know about you guys, but I think she can totally see the Dasey. That's why she moved on. If she thought there was still hope for her getting with Derek, she wouldn't have moved on right? So, can Sam, Ralph, Kendra, Sally, even Sheldon. And of course Lizzie, Edwin and Marti. Then there's one of the most corny, cheesy parts of the story. The 'someday, I'm going to marry you.' But even though it was cheesy, it was great.
Don't forget to look for chapter three, coming tomorrow,
end author's note.

I'm glad Aly is okay. Derek and Casey are like her Mommy/Daddy. I like how you acknowledge that. I can't wait to read more and see what happens! _________________

Disclaimer: I do not own Life With Derek or any of its characters. I also do not own the song These Hard Times by Matchbox 20 from their albumn Exile On Mainstream.
Warning: Rated T for Teen for later chapters. And because I'm paranoid.
Chapter Three: These Hard Times
We may lose our focus,
There's just too many words,
We never meant to learn,
And we don't feel so alive
-Matchbox 20, These Hard Times
7 hours later, that's right 7, the family sat in Aly's room, all half asleep. Visiting hours were over, but Derek had charmed the nurse into letting them stay the night. Marti was already asleep, sprawled out on the mini couch in the room and the rest were just about there.
Derek opened his eyes, and looked over at Lizzie, Edwin and Marti. Gently, he shifted Casey and she opened one eye.
''G'way.''
He smiled and stood, kissing her forehead. ''Go back to sleep.''
''M'kay''
He laughed quietly and turned to his sleeping brother. ''Hey, Ed.''
''5 more minutes.''
Derek raised an eyebrow and clipped him on the back of the head. ''Wake up, Edweirdo.''
Edwin opened his eyes and gently lifted Lizzie off his chest, glaring at his older brother.
''You're gonna hit me aren't you?'' Derek asked.
''Thinking about it.''
''Why don't you tak the girls home.''
Edwin yawned and stood. ''You sure?''
''Yeah, it's been a long day. Go home, get some rest.''
Edwin looked over Derek's shoulder at Casey. ''What about you guys?''
''We're going to stay here with Aly. Do you need money for the cab?''
Edwin shook his head. ''No, Paul said we could call him when we needed a ride home.''
Lizzie stirred and opened her eyes groggily. ''What's going on?''
''It's late, Liz.'' Edwin said gently. ''I'm going to take you and Marti home, okay?''
Lizzie nodded and forced herself awake. ''I'll...'' She broke off in a yawn. ''I'll call Paul.''
''Okay,'' Derek spared a glance at the sleeping Aly. ''I assume you guys aren't going to school tomorrow?''
Lizzie shook her head, as she rumaged around in her purse for her cellphone. ''We're coming here first thing tomorrow. We already set up a sitter for Marti.''
''Great.'' Derek kissed Lizzie on the forehead and gave Edwin a one armed hug.
''You're sure?'' Edwin repeated, reluctant to leave.
''Yes. Just make sure Marti get's straight to bed.''
''Will do.''
Lizzie flipped her cellphone shut. ''Paul's on his way. We should go meet him in the lobby.'' She paused for a minute as Edwin picked up Marti and started out the door. She turned back to Derek and smiled softly. ''Take care of our girl.'' She looked over his shoulder at Casey. ''Both of them.''
Derek smiled and wrapped an arm around her, kissing her head. ''You got it, Lizard.''
''Good.'' She pulled away and a mischevious smile lit up her face. ''Se ya later....Dereka.'' She laughed loudly as she ran out of the room.
Derek shook his head. ''She's hilarious. Just hilarious.'' He sank down next to Casey and looked up at the ceiling, tiredness sleeping through, and blew out a sigh turning back to Casey. ''Case,'' he shook her gently, ''Case, baby, wake up.''
She opened her eyes weakly. ''What? What is it? Is it Aly?'' She yawned and sat up straight.
''Ay's fine. But we really need to figure out what we're going to do with her. We obviously can't take her back to daycare.''
Casey rubbed her eyes, just as Aly let out a small whimper and shifted in her sleep.
Derek looked over at the sleeping toddler, before standing and holding out his hand to Casey. ''Come on, we don't want to wake her. We'll talk in the waiting room.''
Casey took his hand and allowed him to pull her up and out into the waiting room, where they both sank tiredly into chairs.
''Well,'' Casey spoke after a minute. ''I guess we can ask the Davis's to watch her.''
''Until we graduate?''
Casey bit her lip nervously and got to her feet, beginning to pace. ''No. No, that wouldn't be fair to them. They have their own kids.'' She stopped pacing and looked back at him. ''Uh, there is this one thing.'' She sat down next to him, staring at the wall.
''Okay, Case, don't keep me in suspense.''
Casey sighed and turned to look at him. ''A few months ago, I had a meeting with the principal and he said because of my academic standings I could graduate early.''
''How early?''
''Like by November or December. I would get my diploma in the mail, but I'd still get to go to the graduation ceremony.''
He was silent for a minute. ''Is this something that you want to do?''
She let out a breath. ''I think it's something I have to so.''
''Casey, if you don't want to - ''
''I need to do this, Derek.'' She grabbed his hand. ''I have to do this. For Aly. We've made her give up so much for us. I mean, she hasn't really had a normal life, and after what happened today, there's no way I'm going to let her go back to that place. I think it's time I made a sacrifice for her. I'm her mot-sister.''
''Okay.'' Derek gently brushed his lips over hers. ''If this is what you really want to do.''
''It is.''
''Then I support you.'' He paused and let a slow smirk fall across his face. ''I just don't want to be the one to tell Emily.''
Before she could respond, they heard a whimper come frome Aly's room. They looked at each other before pushing past the nurse and into Aly's room.
''What's wrong, baby-girl?''
Aly let out a yelp and put her hand to her head. ''Hurts.''
Derek sighed. ''It's gonna be a long night.''
--00--
The nest morning, Derek and Casey sat at a cafeteria table, steaming cups of coffee in front of them. They were disheveled and had bags under their eyes. At the same time, they dropped their heads onto the table. Almost unconciously, the two reached across the table and gripped each other's hands.
''Wow, you two look like crap.'' A voice said, inturrupting their slumber.
''Go away.'' Derek grumbled.
Emily rolled her eyes and sat down next to Casey as Sam laughed silently and sat next to Derek.
''How's Aly?''
''Sleeping,'' Casey mumbled, lifting her head, ''finally. We were up all night with her.''
Derek's head shot up and he narrowed his eyes. ''Correction. I was up all night with her. You crashed around four.''
''Whatever.'' Casey took a long gulp of her coffee and promptly choked. ''This is horrible.''
''Well, it's hospital coffee, honey, of course it's horrible.'' Derek yawned, his eyes closing.
''Okay, people,'' Emily inturrputed, holding her hands up. ''What exactly happened?''
''Aly fell down the steps at her school.'' Derek explained, without opening his eyes.
''She has a broken leg, a broken arm they had to operate on, and a concussion.'' Casey added, staring into her cup of coffee.
Derek opened his eyes and gave her hand a squeeze. She looked up and met his eyes and smiled.
''Oh my, God.'' Emily frowned, rubbing Casey's back comfortingly.
''Is she going to be okay?'' Sam asked.
''The doctor said she should make a full recovery.'' Derek took a sip of his coffee and grimaced.
''Oh, thank, God.'' Emily put her hand over her heart. ''You should have started with that!'' She reached over the table and swatted Derek.
''Hey! Why do women always hit me?!''
''Anyways,'' Casey started, trying not to laugh. ''I, um, have some news too.'' She looked up and met Derek's eye.
''Oh my, God, you're pregnant!'' Emily squealed, clapping her hands together.
Derek choked on his coffee. ''What?! No, no, no.'' He paused and looked at Casey. ''Right?''
Casey rolled her eyes. ''I'm not pregnant, Dumbass.''
''You're getting married?!'' Emily shouted again.
Derek coughed again and Sam slapped him on the back. ''For God's sake, Em, you're going to kill the poor guy.''
''No.'' Casey laughed. ''I'm graduating early. In November or December actually.''
Emily deflated. ''What? But that's only, like, two months from now.''
''I know. But I really need to take care of Aly, we can't keep sending her to that...place.''
''But-But, it's daycare!'' Emily shouted. ''It's not like it's a toruture chamber!''
''It is for her.'' Casey took another sip of her coffee and choked it down. ''Besides, I'm still going to the ceremony in June.''
Emily felt tears well in her eyes. ''It's not going to be the same without you.'' She pulled Casey in for a hug, ignoring their men rolling their eyes. ''I'll have to hang out with these losers.'' She motioned to the boys and the two girls laughed, ignoring the,
''Hey!''

AN: Well, there isn't much to say about this chapter. I don't really like it, but I didn't want to change it too much. It's shorter, I think. Um, the scene in the cafetria was the one redeeming quailty about this chapter. And I did like Sam's line, 'for God's sake, Em, you're going to kill the poer guy.'' Sam and Emily are dating.
Earlier on I mentioned Paul and he is going to be in the story a fair amount, because he got closer to the Mc-V's over the past two years. So expect some more Paul.
The ''Dereka'' ''Lizard'' gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling writing it and it shows that the whole entire family has gotten closer.
The 'academic standings' thing I think is real, but I'd have to do some research to back that up.
I'm going to wrap this author's note up now, but I do want to talk about the slip Casey almost made when she was talking about why she was going to graduate early. It shows that Casey does think of herself as Aly's mother and Derek as her father.
Well, that's about it.
Stay tuned for the next chapter in POAP coming tomorrow.

Chapter Four: In Pieces
Your lips say that you love,
Your eyes say that you hate
-Linkin Park, In Pieces
2 weeks later, Aly was coming home and a surprise party was underway.
Marti sighed into the balloon she was blowing up. ''I hate this job.''
''Hey,'' Edwin grumbled as he and Lizzie struggled to hang the banner. ''At least it's better then this. I hate heights.''
''I don't know what you guys are complaining about. I have to ice the cake. And if it's not perfect, Casey'll kill me.'' Paul said. He paused thoughtfully, holding the icing knife in his hand. ''That girl scares me sometimes.''
Edwin chuckled and Lizzie shook her head with a smile, trying to stay steady on the ladder.
''You're right.'' Marti said. ''You win.''
Lizzie frowned slightly as she taped one corner of the banner to the wall. ''Ed,'' she started nervously. ''I think we should tell them about us.''
Edwin shook his head. ''Liz, if we tell them, Derek's gonna kill me. And then you won't have a boyfriend anymore.''
''But I hate lying to them,'' Lizzie insisted. ''I mean, they've practically raised us for 2 years.''
''I know, and they've done a great job with Aly, but are you sure they can handle this?''
''Ed, they aren't Mom and George.'' Lizzie froze as soon as the words escaped her lips and she looked down, taking a deep breath.
Edwin sighed slightly, looking away.
''I just mean they're not - '' Lizzie started shakily.
''I know what you meant, Liz.'' Edwin cut in gently.
She smiled at him for a minute, before the sound of a balloon popping and Marti yelping in surprise brought them back to earth and they looked away quickly.
''What if they forbid us from seeing each other?'' Edwin asked.
Lizzie rolled her eyes. ''Ed.''
''I'm serious! I mean, you know how overprotective Derek is when it comes to you and Marti and Aly. And do I even need to tell you what Casey's like?''
''Oh, come on, don't you think if anyone would understand it's Casey and Derek?''
''I don't know, Liz, what if - ''
''What are you guys talking about?'' Marti asked, coming to stand next to them.
Edwin and Lizzie looked at each other, panicked. ''Nothing!''
''Guys!'' Emily and Sam rushed through the front door. ''Derek just called, they're on their way!''
''What? But-But, I haven't finished icing the cake!'' Paul exclaimed.
''So? Just throw some icing on there and spread it.'' Sam said.
Paul opened and closed his mouth several times, before sighing and frantically going back to the cake.
''Paul's afraid of Casey.'' Marti whispered loudly, with a small smirk.
''Oh.'' Sam nodded in understanding and clapped the older man on the shoulder. ''Yeah. We've all been there, man.''
Paul winced painfully as he thought of all the things Casey would do to him if he didn't get this cake perfect.
''Yeah,'' Edwin joined them. ''Remember when Aly got her picture taken at the mall?''
''No!'' Lizzie glared at him and shoved a finger in his chest, on her way to the kitchen. ''That. Never. Happened.''
''Oh, really?''
Lizzie nodded, trying to stare him down. Unfortunatly, she wasn't Casey. And Edwin wasn't Derek.
Edwin blinked for a minute, before turning to Sam and Paul. ''Remember how Derek tried to get her to calm down and they ended up making out in the photo room? Well, Lizzie walked in on that. She was traumatized.''
Lizzie let out a growl, and moved away from them, muttering something under her breath.
''Oh, or when she yelled at the photographer for taking the picture with a sky blue background instead of a black background like she wanted.'' Sam laughed.
''Weren't they banned from the photo shop?'' Paul asked.
Edwin nodded. ''And rumor has it, the photographer retired right after that.'' He laughed. ''Priceless.''
''He-lo!'' Emily appeared. ''People, they are on their way! We need to finish! Now!''
''Sorry, babe.'' Sam kissed her. ''We'll get serious.''
--00--
10 minutes later, the Davis's had arrived and Paul had finally finished icing the cake, just as the car pulled into the driveway.
''They're here!'' Marti announced.
Lizzie flicked off the light, and everyone hid.
They soon heard voices and a key in the lock.
''Casey, will you please calm down, you're going to turn Aly into a neurotic toddler!''
That remark was followed by a smack and Edwin snickered, also followed by a smack.
''Ow, what the hell was that?'' Derek's voice hissed.
''De-rek! Don't swear in front of Aly!''
''You hit me! That's abuse!''
''I resent that.''
''Yeah, right, more like resemble it.''
The door swung open the three entered. Derek was carrying Aly, who looked very interested in their banter.
''You are so de - '' Casey was cut off as everyone jumped up and yelled,
''SURPRISE!''
Casey jumped, and blushed when she realized everyone had heard their argument.
Aly's face contorted in terror, but she relaxed when she saw she was home and her family was there. She smiled brightly and looked up at Derek innocently. ''Cake now?''
''Welcome home, baby.'' Lizzie laughed, kissing her on the cheek.
''Yeah, it's good to have you back, kid.'' Edwin added, ruffling her hair.
Marti came to give Aly a kiss on the cheek. They didn't realize it, but then, there, they looked like a family. A real family. Derek held Aly and Casey stood close by. Lizzie stood next to Casey, Edwin next to Derek. And just as Marti leaned down to kiss Aly on the cheek, Emily snapped a picture, immortalizing the happy moment, forever.
--00--
''Nice job with the icing, Paul.'' Casey smiled, standing next him.
Paul beamed. ''Really?''
Casey nodded. ''Really.''
Paul sighed in relief. ''Oh, thank, God.'' He smiled at Casey and excused himself to go get another drink.
Casey felt someone move up behind her and immediatly knew who it was. She had always been able to sense him.
''Do you really think he did a good job?''
Casey laughed a little. ''Nope.'' She turned and wrapped her arms around his neck. ''But he doesn't need to know that.''
Derek smirked. ''You dirty little liar.''
She grinned, with an innocent shrug. ''I learn from the best.'' And then she leaned up and kissed him.
--00--
Late on, the Davis's and Paul had gone home, leaving, Sam, Emily and the McDonald-Venturi's alone.
Aly was asleep, Derek and Casey were talking privatly on the couch, Sam and Emily were cuddling in a chair, Edwin and Lizzie were whispering in the corner, and Marti was watching them, her curiosity getting the best of her.
At that moment, Edwin and Lizzie broke away from their private talk and Marti looked away quickly. ''Derek, Casey,'' Edwin paused and took a deep breath. ''We have to tell you something.''
Lizzie threaded a hand through his and smiled up at him, as he nervously loosened his collar. She raised an eyebrow at his nervous mumbling and decided to take over. ''We're dating.''
The smiles instantly faded off of everyone's faces and Sam and Emily joined the group.
''Marti, go upstairs.'' Derek's eyes never left Edwin and Lizzie, even as he spoke, gravely calm, to Marti.
''But, Smerek...''
''Now!''
Marti jumped and tears welled in her eyes. Derek had never yelled at her before. She crossed her arms, and ran up the stairs, determined not to let anyone see the tears in her eyes.
Derek stood up, mentally noting he would need to apologize to Marti later. ''Now, I don't think I heard you correctly, you're what?!''
''Dating.'' Lizzie repeated. ''We're dating.''
Derek began pacing, and Casey finally found her voice. ''Lizzie, he's your brother!''
''Step-brother. And what? Like you've never fallen for your step-brother?''
''That was different.''
''It always is when it's you!''
''Oh, yeah, that's right, blame me.'' Casey snorted, standing and moving next to Derek.
''Casey, I'm not blaming you, I'm...Ugh!'' Lizzie threw her hands up in the air, frustrated.
''How long?'' Derek asked, his voice low, his fists clenched, practically shaking with anger.
Edwin and Lizzie looked at each other, and then the floor.
''How long?!'' Derek roared.
''Eight months.''
''Oh, God.'' Casey felt tears of betrayl well in her eyes and she turned into Derek, burying her head in his chest.
Derek wrapped an arm around her, never taking his eyes off of Edwin.
''Lizzie, how could you do this?'' Casey whipped around, betrayl shining in her eyes as she looked at her sister. ''How could you not tell me?''
''I couldn't.'' Lizzie choked out. ''I wanted to, but I knew how you'd react.''
''Why are you trying to make this into my fault?!''
''I'm not!''
''Look, we told you, let's just leave it at that.'' Edwin left the living room and into the foyer.
''Like hell!'' Casey screamed, starting after him. Derek grabbed her around the waist and pulled her back to him.
Lizzie whirled around. ''We aren't going to stop seeing each other!''
''Have you slept together?'' Derek asked, his voice low and dangerous.
Lizzie and Edwin both froze, and their eyes went wide, before looking at the ground.
''Well?!''
''Yes.''
Casey sat down heavily on the couch and Emily sat down next to her, rubbing her back comfortingly.
Derek lunged at Edwin, but Sam leapt in and restrained him. ''How could you?! She's only 15!''
''Look,'' Edwin took a step back. ''It was right after Aly's accident and we were both emotional, and, and it just got carried away.''
''I think I'm gonna be sick,'' Casey mumbled, swallowing hard. She looked up at her sister. ''Did you,'' she broke off and gulped nervously, ''did you at least use protection?''
''Yes! Yes! Of course, yes!'' Lizzie yelped, her face turning red. She seemed to regain her composure and sighed. ''I realize we made the wrong decision keeping our relashonship from you, but we're in love. And I thought that you two, of all people, would understand that!'' With tears shining in her eyes, Lizzie turned and ran up the stairs.
''Lizzie, wait!'' Edwin glared at Derek and Casey before following his girlfriend.
--00--
''Thanks for the party. Sorry about the drama.''
''Oh, it wouldn't be a Dasey party witout drama.'' Emily waved it off and leaned in kissing Derek on the cheek.
''You're funny.''
''I try.''
''Oh, believe me, she tries very hard.'' Sam grinned.
Derek shook his head. ''You're a very disturbing couple.''
Sam and Emily looked at each other. ''We try.''
Emily laughed. ''But, seriously, you take care of her. And tell her to call me tomorrow.''
''Got it.''
With that, Sam and Emily turned and started down the steps, smiling and laughing. Derek stared after them with a small smile. His relashonship with Casey had never been that simple. There was always drama. And alot of it. He turned to the kitchen, where she had been since Lizzie had stormed up to her room. He pinched the bridge of his nose and slowly entered the kitchen.
There she was, furiously scrubbing dishes. He could tell by the way she would angrily swipe her cheek, that she was crying. He leaned against the counter and crossed his arms over her chest, trying to get her to look at h | | |
