Hi from Spain!
What kind of tubes (EL34 or 6550) are better for a good metal sound on a VL502?
I have a VL502 with the original EL34 tubes and the original preamp tubes son I think that is time for a change.
Would i have to re-bias the amp with the new change of tubes?
Thanks and please excuse my english!
Hello, maybe my english won?t be better - I?m from Germany

If you like to get a great metal sound through your VL-502, I think the 6550 might be the better choice.
Of course, if you use highgraded EL34, they deliver a nice Marshall touch in the midrange.
Otherwise 6550 can bring you the punch that man likes in modern high-gain sounds in contemporary metal.
The 6550 Tubes have more power, i.e. your VL-502 might gives you up to 70-75 Watts, which makes it better standing against an 100W amp. Also the frequency-range is tidier and larger than with EL34s. On the other hand they will not reach saturation as soon as the El34s, so that you have plenty of punch up to high volume levels (and it sounds better on low volume as well, if you play it in your living room for studying).
And the gain that is known on poweramp-saturation on Marshall amps - I think you don?t need it on an VL-502 that has plenty of gain, doesn?t it?
In this case I prefer Ruby Tubes, or the premium tubes of the "Tube amp doctor" in Germany. Not really cheap - but outstanding. And they come with a 1/2 year warranty!
Check out JJs on the V1 preamp section and a SINO in the gain stage (V3 and V4) or check out the RT001 the RT030 and the RT882 on the website of the tube amp doctor.
You just have to switch the amp to 6550 on the rear - okay - but my opinion is that it is necessary to check the bias!
