I am Stephan from Swisstropicals LLC, the North American importer and distributor of Poret Filter foam. The main issue with commercial aquarium filters is the frequent maintenance required to keep sponge filters, power filters, canister filters, etc. running properly. The filter volume (=useable surface area) in most of these is simply too small, the filter material has the wrong pore size (or no pores at all in closed cell sponge), and/or the water flow is simply too fast and it clogs them up quickly. Needless to say that the little toy filters seen everywhere have essentially no effect other than aerating the water. For big fish such as discus, good water quality (i.e. filtration) is the key to proper growth and beauty.
I prefer real filters that can handle the job and require maintenance only 1-2 times a year at the most. For example, with Hamburg Mattenfilters (HMF) you can raise 100-150 bristlenose plecos in a 15-Gal for 6-8 months w/o ever changing/cleaning the filter. And I drop 8-10 food tablets in there every day!
I am using HMFs in all my tanks >10-Gal, including a 240-Gal show tank with 40 zebra plecos and 10 Altum Angels in my living room. How I build them for smaller tanks is shown but I will add more pics over time for larger projects. You can go to my website for ideas.
You can email me questions you may have. I also have an FAQ page for the more common ones, so please read them first.
Happy Discuskeeping
