Here's something to keep your mind off of it, for maybe a couple days.
If you've ever been to Fictionpress, you know it's the Original Story-verse of Fanfiction.net. The thing is, though, that every so often you meet an author who is amazing in every way.
And this is the case. (I'm shamelessly plugging this because it's a story that involves two stepsiblings actually getting together.)
Both of them have the same basic plot about an 18-year-old girl named Adrian whose father re-marries, and therefore she gains three new stepbrothers, one of them also 18 years old, Alex. Adrian and Alex have a one-night stand, and this story is basically about the ramifications about that.
The difference between the two stories is that personally, I think the Redux is better, and let's face it, it was rewritten for a reason.
Anyway, the original is on Adrian's turf in Chicago, IL, and is their summer before college. Even though it's written perfectly (in the grammar sense) and so on, when you look back on it, as a package it truly doesn't give the illusion of a good story, though I have read it twice.
The redux is in Arizona with Alex, and I like that better because I like seeing Alex as the king of everything. It also takes place in the fall of their senior year, so you see them at school. Also, this has Alex's friends, who really are a huge element of this story. In fact, one of them has a sequel centering around him which is currently in progress (Trouble Starts With a Q, check the author's page for it.)
Also, you don't have to worry about waiting in agony for the next chapter, because both stories are complete.
One warning: Both of them are rated M, though it's the sophisticated type of rated M. Also, as the author describes, it's kind of like a high school soap on crack, and Adrian and Alex are both kind of frustratingly arrogant and selfish people. But yet you still like them, which is good writing if you can make the two leads unlikeable, but likeable.
I just thought of this because today at school, I felt like re-reading Reason and Romance Redux (for the third time. It's that good).
I suggest reading Redux first, and then reading the original if you like Redux. I read Redux first, so maybe I'm biased.
I love both of those fics. I read the original Reason and Romance when she first posted it, but I was thrilled to see Redux because as you said, it was rewritten for a reason. Definitely the stronger of the two stories.
My absolute fave is the sequel to Redux, "Trouble Starts with a Q." I adore Quentin!
