Ok, so I used to read a lot of Dasey fanfics and I like to consider myself a writer, but I've never actually wrote a fanfic. I tried at one point but gave up after finding it a little...too difficult...at the time. Now, I'm interested in trying again, but I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions...either generally for when writing a fanfic, or specifically for a story I could write...being a newbie to this I could really use any help I could get. Thanks in advance, I'd really appreciate it! Wink
btw, I think this is my 100th post! YAY! Finally!

Hmm... let's see...

- First and foremost, ALWAYS check your spelling and grammar. There's nothing more irritating than stumbling across a fanfic that looks like it's been written by a five-year-old.

- Try to steer clear of the clichés. There's only so many times you can read a fic with the same sort of plotline as another before it gets boring.

- Make it interesting! Suspense, foreshadowing, forbidden romance, sneaking around, a touch of humor... always fun. Wink

- Make sure it flows.

That's all I can think of right now. It's 6:40 in the morning right now, so my brain is kind of "blah", so you'll have to forgive me for my lack of ideas, haha. Razz

Thanks! I can really use all the ideas/help I can get.
I'd have to say the hardest part about this has to be avoiding clichés as you mentioned.
I mean I went on FF for the first time in months the other day and I couldnt believe how many summerys read "Casey's pregnant" or something along those lines...I mean...after 100's of those, you kind of want something different....I get that.
I mean I guess you could do something with a similar theme of something already done, as long as it has a new twist...Idk...
I just hate being unoriginal, it bugs me...that combine with horrible spelling and a low self-esteem as a writer is what keeps me back...but I really want to try...so I'm here...
Thanks again Wink

I've been writing fanfiction since 6th grade. On FF.net I've written a total of 18 stories there, so I think that I have more backround on writing stuff. (My grandma is an author too. Not that I'm trying to flaunt nor give off the impression that I am the master of writing, because there are some things I need to work on as an author. )

For getting ideas, I would say to do something that inspires you such as watching episodes of LWD and anaylze it. One of my most sucessful stories was when I was thinking about an episode and thinking what if this happen. It's a start at least. Songs are a good source of inspiration too.

As for the hints, I can give you some hints, but most of the time you have to keep working on it to find your writing style. If spelling and grammer are a problem seek a beta reader. (someone who will read through your story and correct spelling and grammer. They can also help when you get stuck.)

I'll post more hints later, I'm being kicked off the computer.

This is very true. Songs are usually what inspire me most but then episodes too. I remember one day I was just listening to music on my bed and BAM! The idea for The Pit Stop That Changed Our Lives hit me. Which reminds me...I need to update that. But anyways, I also have a couple of tips for you.

So I participated in this writing contest thing for the month of November and what it was is that you have to write a novel in a month. Yes I didn't succeed cause I had tons of work to do or I was too lazy to work on THAT story but I got some good tips from it. I know they are for original stories but they work for any type of writing too.

1. If a scene bores you: end it. There's no reason to go on and on and on in the same scene if its boring to you. Do what you want to do and if it seems like its dragging on for you it probably will for the readers. I really like this tip. It helped me out a lot. So if I feel a scene is dragging on, I end it and move it to the next scene.

2. Draw out your scene. If you're having trouble picturing your scene or remembering how its supposed to look, draw it out. I don't really use this because I find no gain from it but I know it helps other people.

3. This is something I just got from my cousin. Take notes. If you have an idea make sure to write it down. Or else you might forget. If you have an idea for a scene later on (this ALWAYS happens to me) write it down.

Anyways, two out of these tips help me out. And then I also agree with RoseGarden about getting a beta reader to look it over before you post it if you feel you're not a master at spelling and grammar. Because those things make or break your story...it could be the GREATEST idea or plot ever but if its written poorly not many people will stick around to read it. Hope these tips help you and GOOD LUCK on your first fanfic! I can't wait to read it. Send me the link when you post it?

Thanks everyone for ur support. I definetly need a beta...I have serious grammer/spelling issues...dont even get me started.
But,I think I have some what of a plot...thanks to Dasey1424 here on DN (*cheers*)
As for your stratigies Julie...I love them all. The first one is great b/c I'm always scared I'm going to bore someone. The second one is good for me cause I love art. And the third one is great because most of my ideas come at night...so I'll put a notebook by my bed that I can jot stuff down with...YAY!!!!
This is finally happening. I'm freaked out. Will you guys tell if you seriously dont like it? I'd appeciate real reviews with constructive critism which Ik you'll give. Very Happy
Lastly, does anyone know any good betas...before I go on a search on my own...
Thanks again Wink
P.S. I'll try to anaylze an episode next time...if things go well with this one... Embarassed

YAY! I'm glad all my tips can apply to you. And help. There are plenty of beta readers and if you want, I could even help you. But yes, I will make sure to give you constructive criticism. When my friend started writing I didn't just say I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. I gave her criticism and THEN told her I loved it. LOL. Can't wait to read it Judy!

I think this is one of the most important things to know...

Make sure you understand the characters!!

If you're writing fanfiction, and you're planning on putting the characters through something they've never been through before, make sure you understand how their mind works. It's like acting -- you can't only know what they're going to do and say, you have to understand why, and their thoughts behind their actions. So its like you got to get through into their mind. Know why they do the things they do, know what makes them tick and what makes them laugh. Things like that
Very Happy
