Sorry I've been rather absent. School's consumed my life so much lately, I barely have time to come online.
Here is another post though.

Life of the Party

I think I was more excited for Casey's album release party than she was. Parties were never really her thing, but you'd think one as big as this one that was just for her would make her happy. Well, then you thought wrong. This party means as much to her as math class means to me.

There was this insanely attractive girl at the album release party. She had to be one of the most gorgeous things I've ever seen; long blonde hair, legs that seemed to go on for miles and the bluest eyes I've ever seen. Well, besides Casey's. Her eyes were also an amazing shade of blue, but that didn't really matter to me.

Of course, I went over and made my move. Is that even a question? I'm Derek Venturi.

"Hey, I'm Derek." I introduced myself.

She smiled. "Halley. You're in Casey's band, right?"

So she knew who I was. "Yeah, I'm her guitarist."

"I love her first single." She said just as the song, Take Me Away, began to play.

"You know, I co-wrote that with her." I bragged. It didn't seem to be working too much. She was playing hard to get.

She nodded and smiled again. She had a really nice smile, too. "That's cool."

The conversation was beginning to slow down. Not a very good sign. "Sooo... What's your connection to the industry?" I asked, putting on as much of my charm as I could muster.

The tall, dark-haired guy who was behind her talking to Anderson turned around and slipped his arm around her.

"I am." He said, protectively.

Right now, I didn't feel like getting involved with boyfriends or whatever. Especially this guy. It's not really that he scared me, I guess I just wasn't in the mood. I saw no point. This girl was fine, but not worth a fight.

I excused myself and scanned the room for anyone I could talk to. Sam and Ralph were both busy flirting with some cute girls. Why is it that they were getting more female attention than me? Casey was on the other end of the room, struggling to talk to some record label people. Being the good brother that I am and knowing she hated that kind of attention, I did my part to help her out.

"Excuse me," I cleared my throat, "But may I borrow my step-sister for a moment? It's important."

The two men nodded and split up in opposite directions, scavenging the room for more innocent people to torture with business talk.

"Enjoying your party?" I asked her.

She rolled her eyes and played with the umbrella in her drink. "No. I don't know almost anyone here. I just want to throw my punch in their face when they start talking to me like I'm some kind of business deal!" Her temper momentarily flared. Wow, I wasn't used to seeing her like that. She looked kinda... Hot. No. No. What am I thinking? Casey is not hot.

"Yeah, I know what you mean." I said. "All the cute girls here have boyfriends. Or Sam and Ralph have gotten their grimy hands on them first."

She laughed a short, breathy laugh. "Speaking of boyfriends," her expression changed. She looked kind of sad now. "Have you seen Dex? I haven't seen him all night."

I looked around the room, hoping to spot the guy but when I did, I regretted it. He was talking to some girl. Not the kind of innocent talking you probably have in mind. I didn't have much time to think about what I should do, so I decided I'd cover for him. If I were in his shoes, I'd want someone to cover for me too.

I shook my head. "Nope, haven't seen him."

"Oh well." She paused. "Oh, come with me! I want to introduce you to Ian. He's going to be our tour manager."

Casey grabbed my hand and maneuvered me through the sea of people and tapped this guy on his shoulder. He turned around smiling and... Oh crap.

Our tour manager Ian also happens to be creepy-looking-boyfriend-dude of that Halley chick I thought was hot. His smile instantly faded when he saw me standing next to Casey.

"Oh, it's you."

Casey raised an eyebrow, "You two have met?"

Ian nodded and put his hand out for me to shake anyway. The look in his eyes were still kind of pissed off. Could I really blame him? I'd hate it if some guy literally hit on my girlfriend right behind my back too.

Another one of Casey's new songs came on, one of the three songs I wrote with her, and Ian changed the subject, which I thank him for, I didn't want to talk about that incident with Casey. She already thinks I'm girl obsessed enough. "You know, Casey, I think I like this song best out of all the songs on your album."

Casey grinned at him thankfully. "Thanks. Actually, my step-brother Derek, here co-wrote it with me. He's a genius."

"Not really." I disagreed. "She wrote most of it."

Without taking his dark eyes off me, he said, "I'll bet." Wow, he must have some issues if he was still mad about that whole incident with that Halley girl. In an instant, he was smiling again at Casey. "I'll see you in a few weeks, then. I have somewhere to be."

Ah yes, in a few weeks tour will start. Despite having to deal with that guy all summer, I felt suddenly happy and carefree. I've never looked forward to a summer so much in my life. And if you know Derek Venturi, you know how important the second season of the year is to me.

I couldn't wait to feel the adrenaline rush of being on stage with my friends and Casey. I couldn't wait to party after every show and sleep in until we had to go up on stage again. I couldn't wait for any of it.

Mostly, I couldn't wait to get out of Toronto. God knows I love the city, but it really was time to see more of the country. I've barely ever been out of Ontario.

Oh, only a few more weeks to go.

------------

In the next post, someone else has everyone's attention at home. And it's not Casey. Or Derek.
For once.

Everyone Changes

I awoke in the late afternoon one Saturday to find that my little brother had taken a few of my best colognes and snuck them away to his room. I found this out because I smelled the heavy presence of Axe in the air as I walked down the hallway. I passed by his room and his door was open a crack, so I looked in and there he was, trying on some of his best clothes, tossing the rejects to a pile on his bed.

Slowly, I opened the door and leaned on his wall.

“Does someone have a hot date tonight?” I asked Ed, noticing the small changes he’s made to his room since the last time I’ve seen it. Which must have been weeks ago, by the way.

He looked up at me and shrugged, “Sort of.”

“Sort of?” I walked over to him, taking the blue striped button-down shirt he wore to the season one finale of Headliner when Casey was declared winner. “Wear this over a band tee; it makes you look more mature, but still laid back. Girls love that.”

He eagerly changed into the shirt and looked at himself in the mirror, obviously pleased with what he saw.

“So, what’s her name?”

He blinked. “Huh?”

I noticed he had my Guitar Hero poster up on his wall and wondered how it got there. “Your girlfriend. What’s her name?”

“Oh,” he blushed, “Jessica. And she is not my girlfriend, Derek!”

“Not yet anyway. If you want my advice, don’t try to hard. If you’ve already got the date, she must be kind of interested. Trying to hard will ruin it all.” I told him. “Oh yeah, and don’t wear a tie either."

He considered this and told me he’d like to have time alone. That was my cue to leave while he tried to do something cool and innovated with his hair. Normally, Ed would embrace my help, especially when it came to matters like this. It was bizarre and totally unexpected to have him pretty much kick him out of his room. Up until now, I thought he looked up to me. Maybe he just doesn’t need me as much anymore.

Aw, my little brother’s growing up.

Wait, is he even still my brother?

As days went by and I had nothing to do, I kept noticing a change in Edwin’s behavior.

He was out more, but that was typical behavior for a guy when he had a girlfriend, but what concerned me was that he’d get home at like, ten thirty, sometimes eleven. I know school just let out for the summer and all, but it was still odd. What is there to do at eleven for a thirteen year old? I mean, it’s not like he can get in to any clubs or drive or whatever. And the mall and local movie theatres closed at ten, so it’s not like he could be there.

Something strange was going on and if I didn’t need to prepare for three months of a rigorous tour schedule, I would have tried to find out. The honest truth I didn’t even want to admit to myself was that I didn’t want to find out what it was and then regret it. Some things are just better left alone.

Here’s how things went for the next few weeks: I’d spend most of the day practicing with the guys and occasionally Casey, come home around four to find Edwin either gone or locked up in his room blasting obnoxious rap music with vulgar lyrics, and watch TV, flipping aimlessly through music videos, movies, and game shows. After a few days, I settled on watching some stupid show about a guy who fought demons. Re-runs were aired every night, so I always had something to watch.

It wasn’t until we had three days left before we went on tour before Edwin’s new lifestyle become completely palpable. Lizzie tensely sat down next to me on the couch while I was watching TV and made small talk about how the main character on the demon show was cute. After a few minutes of pointless conversation, she cut to the chase.

“I think Edwin is smoking.” She said suddenly, her voice monotone and gloomy, which was a very big deal for her usually up-beat and happiness.

Though I knew Edwin was changing for the worst, I was not expecting something like this. I always thought he knew better.

“He smells bad all the time, like cigarettes and that girl Jessica smokes. She gets the cigarettes from her older brother, who just doesn’t care.”

“That’s jumping to conclusions.” I said, not sure if I was trying to convince her or myself that.

She sighed and looked at the shaving cream advertisement on the television. I did the same but didn’t concentrate on it much. My mind was trying to make sense of the news I had just received.

“Wow,” was all I could say.

Hesitantly, she pulled out a cigarette out of the pocket of her black hoodie. “I found this in his room this morning when I went to see if he took my math homework. Again.”

A part of me was glad Lizzie told me what was going on. At least now I wasn’t totally clueless. I had a vague idea of what was going on in my brother’s life, even if he hadn’t told me- or anyone, for that matter- himself. Still, another part of me wished she hadn’t said a word; especially not so close to tour. I really wanted to put my all into it. It’s not like I’m exactly known for worrying and this could be something I could easily push to the side for awhile, but Ed was my brother. I mean, how can I ever expect to change if I keep acting like the same person?

In the end, I decided not to confront Ed about it. He had to learn from his own mistakes. Just to be safe, I told Lizzie to keep an eye out for him and if things got any worse, to tell the parents about it.

And from then on, it was only a matter of fate.

Major Dasey coming up!

Ooh... good chapter.

A part of me wonders if Edwin wll suck Lizzie into his new lifestyle or if she'll be able to get HIM out of it in time. Razz

Sorry but I won't be finishing Fastlane after all. I ended up using it for a school project and it made me lose major interest in it. I just changed the names and some storylines, but it was pretty much the same thing. I got an A+ on the assignment but school kills everything for me. That's the last time I use an FF for school.

Once again, I'm really sorry, but I will be writing another Dasey soon that I think is wayy better than this anyway.

BUT, if you want to see me keep going with Fastlane, I can do it in the form of a teenage girl's gossip blog. Maybe that could be interesting. What do you think?
