Ooh! Guess what? So I started re-reading the book last night, right, and I found SO many hints in the first few chapters that PROVE that Ralph and Jack are totally gay for each other!
For example:
Chapter 1 (Pg. 19)
"I'm chief then."
The circle of boys broke into applause. Even the choir applauded; and the freckles on Jack's face disappeared under a blush of mortification. He started up, then changed his mind and sat down again while the air rang. Ralph looked at him, eager to offer something.
"The choir belongs to you, of course."
Aww!
Then, there's this:
Chapter 1 (Pg. 20)
Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with shy liking.
I'm... I'm sorry - what was that? SHY LIKING?! *Squee*
And this:
As if released from class, the choir boys stood up, chattered, piled their black cloaks on the grass. Jack laid his on the trunk by Ralph. His grey shorts were sticking to him with sweat. Ralph glanced at them admiringly, and when Jack saw his glance he explained.
"I tried to get over that hill to seee if there was water all around. But your shell called us."
First of all... there's something I noticed that's quite repetitive throughout the book (when they're still in the same tribe, I mean) - Jack is almost ALWAYS near Ralph! Like... ALWAYS!
Then there's the next bolded one... umm... what? What's so admirable about sticky shorts? Haha. I cracked up when I read that. Ralph was totally checking Jack out and we all know it. Golding, you sneaky bastard.
Now, onto the next chapter!
Chapter 2 (Pg. 32)
Ralph felt the conch lifted from his lap. Then Piggy was standing cradling the great cream shell and the shouting died down. Jack, left on his feet, looked uncertainly at Ralph who smiled and patted the log. Jack sat down.
Aww... and, again, I'd like to point out that they're always near each other!
Oh, then there's this:
Chapter 2 (Pg. 38-39)
At the return Ralph found himself alone on a limb with Jack and they grinned at each other, sharing this burden. Once more, amid the breeze, the shouting, the slanting sunlight on the mountain, was shed that glamour, that strange invisible light of friendship, adventure and content.
"Almost too heavy."
Jack grinned back.
"Not for the two of us."
Together, joined in effort by the burden, they staggered up the last steep of the mountain. Together, they chanted. One! Two! Three! and crashed the log on to the great pile. Then they stepped back, laughing with triumphant pleasure, so that immediately Ralph had to stand on his head.
Together, together, together! ALL THE TIME.
Then...
Ralph and Jack looked at each other while society paused about them. The shameful knowledge grew in them and they did not know how to begin confession.
Ralph spoke first, crimson in the face.
"Will you?"
He cleared his throat and went on.
"Will you light the fire?"
Now the absurd situation was open, Jack blushed too. He began to mutter vaguely.
Can someone please tell me why these boys are blushing so much around each other? Dear God! I mean, if THAT isn't an obvious crush, I don't know WHAT is.
Then this...
Chapter 2 (Pg. 40)
There was pushing and pulling and officious cries. Ralph moved the lsenses back and forth, this way and that, till a glossy white image of the declining sun lay on a piece of rotten wood. Almost at once a thin trickle of smoke rose up and made him cough. Jack knelt too and blew gently, so that the smoke drifted away, thickening, and a tiny flame appeared.
Dear God, Jack. Why must you be by Ralph at all times if you're not crushing on him?
Now, onto the next chapter!
Chapter 3 (Pg. 53)
"Crackers. Remember when we went exploring?"
They grinned at each other, remembering the glamour of the first day. Ralph went on.
"So we need shelters as a sort of -"
"Home."
"That's right."
Jack drew up his legs, clasped his knees and frowned in an effort to attain clarity.
"All the same - in the forest. I mean when you're hunting - not when you're getting fruit, of course, but when you're on your own -"
He paused for a moment, not sure if Ralph would take him seriously.
"Go on."
"If you're hunting sometimes you catch yourself feeling as if -" He flushed suddenly.
Aww... he's not sure if Ralph will take him seriously? He CARES about Ralph's opinion? <3
Then there he goes with the blushing/flushing again...
And now, onto the jealous/lovers' quarrel chapters!
Chapter 5 (Pg. 98 )
"Piggy's got the conch."
"That's right - favour Piggy as you always do -"
Yikes. SOMEONE'S jealous. And that's not the only scene where Jack's expressed jealously.
Chapter 6 (Pg. 115)
A sound behind him made him turn. Jack was edging along the ledge.
"Couldn't let you do it on your own."
Protective, much?
Chapter 7 (Pg. 129-130)
"I don't mind going," said Jack hotly. "I'll go when we get there. Won't you? Would you rather go back to the shelters and tell Piggy?"
Now it was Ralph's turn to flush but he spoke despairingly, out of the new understanding that Piggy had given him.
"Why do you hate me?"
The boys stirred uneasily, as though something indecent had been said. The silence lengthened.
Ralph, still hot and hurt, turned away first.
Alright, so we've got jealousy and a lovers' spat. Lovely. And... aww... Ralph thinks Jack hates him!
Then there's this...
Chapter 7 (Pg. 130)
The boys peered at each other doubtfully. Ralph made a decision.
"We'll go straight across to the platform and climb tomorrow."
They murmured in agreement; but Jack was standing by his shoulder.
Unbelievable. Even when they're in a fight, Jack's still near him. Usually people stand somewhere else when they're mad at someone, but not Jack because Jack loves Ralph.
Now, onto the infamous break up scene. I mean... when Jack leaves the tribe.
Chapter 8 (Pg. 140)
"I'm not going to be part of Ralph's lot -"
He looked along the right-hand logs, numbering the hunters that had been a choir.
"I'm going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too."
He bludered out of the triangle towards the drop to the white sand.
"Jack!"
Jack turned and looked back at Ralph. For a moment he paused and then cried out, high-pitched, enraged.
"- No!"
He leapt down from the platform and an along the beach, paying no heed to the steady fall of his tears; and until he dived into the forest Ralph watched him.
Noo! Jack! DON'T LEAVE RALPH! Ralph, don't let him leave!
But alas, we all know what happens from there.
And that's all the evidence I've found (so far).

On a side note, I have this theory that Jack's entire choir is gay.
For example:
Chapter 1 (Pg. 22)
[End of paragraph 3] When they had done laughing, Simon stroked Ralph's arm shyly; and they had to laugh again.
Seems like Jack's not the only one who's got the hots for Ralph.
Chapter 4 (Pg. 65)
"Roger."
Jack was standing under a tree about ten yards away. When Roger opened his eyes and saw him, a darker shadow crept beneath the swarthiness of his skin; but Jack noticed nothing. He was eager, imatient, beckoning, so that Roger went to him.
That... that sounded kind of sexual... and it looks like Ralph's not the only one who likes Jack. _________________ Soul x Maka: My [anime] OTP -- /Never has an unoffical pairing been so blatantly obvious. They're soulmates, I tell you!/
You know what I've noticed? A lot of old books have homosexual undertones in it, just the wording of it, I mean, all those examples you've listed are fantastic. I might consider becoming a yaoi fangirl myself... _________________
