Summary: Upon arriving at Thompson High, Casey McDonald successfully manages to capture the attention of the school’s devil, Derek Venturi, and just as things start to heat up… problems start to arise. (Dasey, Lizwin, Shemily…AU! R&R!)

Disclaimer: Don’t own Life With Derek or Devil Beside You. Or MSN… or Facebook… or Twilight… or anything for that matter. ‘Nuff said.

My Note: First of all, I’d like to mention that this fic is going to be co-written by TWO authors - myself (Lady Azura) and Steph (stephluvvsyou). Basically, after being introduced to and watching a Taiwanese drama called, “Devil Beside You”, we noticed some very freaky parallels between the two series’ and their two main characters, and with the encouragement of all of our friends over at Dasey Nation, Steph and I finally decided to write this.

Steph’s Note: I must say that when the idea of writing a fic that followed a story line as awesome as 'Devil Beside You', I was so pumped at being able to put Derek and Casey in the shoes of Ahmon and Qi Yue. Having Miranda co-write with me is like a dream come true, as I have been admiring her writings for a while now. I hope that together we can do this story justice! I know that many of you have been anticipating the story, so I just want to say thanks for the encouragement you gave to both Miranda and I - We hope that we can bring you a story you'll never forget!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Devil’s Twist
Prologue

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“You can’t stay mad at me forever, you know.”

Sixteen-year-old Casey McDonald immediately stopped brushing her hair to narrow her eyes and glare hard at the woman currently leaning against her doorframe.

“No,” she reasoned, “but I can sure as hell try.”

The woman, Nora, sighed.

“Casey, I know you’re angry -” she started, but Casey’s bitter laugh cut her off.

“Angry?” She repeated, “Angry is an understatement. I think downright furious would be a more suitable word, wouldn’t you agree, Mother?” Casey didn’t even let her mother answer before she went on, “I mean, how could you do this to me? You took me away from everything! My home, my friends, my school, my teachers - everything I’ve worked for has been torn out from underneath me, thanks to you!”

“Casey,” Nora tried again, “You know… with my job and all… this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me! Casey, honey, I’ve been waiting for an offer like this since… well, since before you and Lizzie were born, and I know you’re mad now, but sometimes change is a good thing. I’m sure you’ll meet new friends… and you’ll be going to a public school, so you’re bound to run into some cute boys and…”

Casey promptly rolled her eyes and tuned her mother out, but continued to glare at her through her vanity mirror’s reflection. Finally, after about ten minutes or so, her mother realized she wasn’t listening and stopped ranting, before making some excuse about unpacking the silverware and leaving Casey to do as she pleased. So, after combing her hair a few more times, said teenager set her brush down and made her way over to her laptop, which she was glad to have unpacked and charged earlier that day.

She surfed her favorite sites first to see if anything new had popped up before moving on to her Facebook account. There were a few messages left on her wall - most of them were from all her friends back at Fletcher Academy, wishing her luck at her new school and such. She quickly replied to all of them before continuing, and after checking her e-mail and deleting all the spam and junk mail, she eventually decided to sign onto MSN, where her foul mood immediately brightened when she noticed that her sister was online. Before she could say anything, her sister’s own message appeared on her screen.

Soccer Girl says: Hey!!!!

Casey smiled and quickly typed up her reply.

Pink Princess(F) says: Hey Liz, how are you?

Soccer Girl says: I’m fine, you? How’s the new house?????

Pink Princess(F) says: That’s good. The house is… okay, I guess. I miss you!!! (L)

Soccer Girl says: I miss you too!(L)(L)(L) Oh, by the way, dad says hi. So does Caroline.

Pink Princess(F) says: Tell him I say hi back. How’s Caroline, by the way?

Soccer Girl says: Horrible. Like usual. I hate her! She’s so bossy and mean! She took me out school shopping the other day and she bought me these tight little shirts and skirts and told me that THAT is how a “proper girl” dresses and that I should “grow up” and “grow out” of my “tomboy” stage and start acting like a “real” woman! Can you believe her?!!
Pink Princess(F) says: Ouch. Did you tell dad?

Soccer Girl says: No… I tried, but Caroline was there and he always takes her side over mine… I swear, I might as well be invisible. Hey, do you think him or mom would care if I just… you know… snuck off one night and caught a flight to London? I know you hate it - at least, that’s what I heard mom tell dad over the phone just now - but anything is better than being stuck with Caroline all day.

Pink Princess(F) says: I don’t think you’d get away with it… though, honestly, I really wish you were here. At least then, I wouldn’t have to be going through this alone!

Soccer Girl says: I wish so too… ugh… Caroline’s kicking me off, now. Ttyl! Love ya! (L)

Before Casey could even respond, Lizzie had signed off. She sighed and quickly signed off - she wasn’t in the mood to talk to anyone else at the moment - before setting her laptop aside and making her way over to the other side of the room, where she began rummaging through a few open boxes in search of “Twilight”. Once she’d finally found it, she quietly snuck out of her room and down the hall, where she crept through the kitchen and was eventually spotted by her mother entering.

“Where are you going?” asked Nora.

“Out,” Casey replied simply, making sure to avoid eye contact, “You know… to read… stuff like that.”

She didn’t wait for her mother’s response before slipping passed her and out the front door, where she plopped down on the old wooden bench on their porch - which was already there when they moved in - and flipped open her book. She instantly became lost in a world of fantasy - of vampires and werewolves and forbidden romance, and was so wrapped up in her own little world that she didn’t even bat an eyelash when the street lights flickered on, or when a father from across the street called out for his kids to come inside for bed. Nothing could possibly break her out of her current reverie.

Or so she thought.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a lone male figure strolled along the side of the road of a predominately well-off neighborhood, he made a move to button up the rest of his jacket and mentally cursed himself for forgetting to bring a scarf with him, as that autumn evening’s air was crisp and cool and gave him frostbite. As he continued on his way, the wind started to pick up, causing his jacket to billow behind him and he was glad he’d at least remembered to wear gloves. He watched with little interest as the street lights flickered on all around him, and slid his right hand into his coat pocket to pull out a pack of cigarettes.

Leaning against a street lamp, he lit one and inhaled his addiction. He’d been told countless times that smoking would be the death of him, but in all honesty, he could care less. Tilting his head back, the male - a teenage boy no older than sixteen or seventeen - exhaled and briefly admired the stars glittering in the dark sky before glancing over at the house across from him.

His brow furrowed instantly when he noticed the silver BMW in the driveway and the light emitting from the two front windows.

Someone had moved in. How interesting, he mused.

As he took another drag, he noticed the porch light on and his dark gaze immediately landed on a girl around his age, sitting there, reading a book. His lips curled as he observed her, watching her flip through pages of her book and tuck her brown hair behind her pierced ears whenever the long tendrils became a nuisance. Eventually, the girl sensed someone watching her and looked up.

Their eyes met.

They stared at one another for what seemed like eternity, then she tore her own cerulean gaze away from his and focused all her attention back on her book.

The boy smirked, finishing off the rest of his cigarette before tossing the butt and crushing it beneath his shoe. He was about to approach the girl when a sudden vibration buzzed against his leg. He frowned, pulling out his cell phone and flipping it open to read the text from his younger brother, before rolling his eyes and snapping it shut.

When he looked back up, the girl was gone.

Shrugging, the boy just turned around and continued on his way.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Note: And that’s the end of the prologue! I’d like to take this time to announce that neither Steph nor I condone smoking at all, so children… don’t! Don’t give into peer pressure! Smoking kills! The reason Derek (it was CLEARLY Derek. Who else would it be?) smokes is… well… the reason will be explained in future chapters, but for now… I’ll shut up.

Moving on, Caroline is just a character I thought up on a whim. She’s supposed to be Dennis McDonald’s new girlfriend/fiancée figure. She’s not really that important, but she’s sort of integral to Lizzie’s own issues. Speaking of Lizzie… she won’t actually APPEAR in the fic until much later on. Right now, she’s living with Dennis and Caroline in New York, whereas Casey is living with Nora. Don’t worry, though, she’ll eventually make her debut in the fic.

OH! And before I forget… well, WE, considering Steph and I are doing this together…

Edwin and Lizzie are 14, so they’re in high school. There’s a reason for this. Derek and Casey are 16. Marti is… 9. Our apologies for messing with the ages, but certain things have to be done in order to accommodate for the fic.

We’d also like to thank PAIGE for helping us with the title! Thanks so much!

Steph’s Note: First of all - don't smoke!! Haha, secondly - I hope you enjoyed this taste of what you have to look forward to in the next chapters! So let us know what you thought of the prologue! We will love you forever )

Devil’s Twist
New Girl

X

Casey took a deep, shaky breath before walking through the front doors of Sir John Sparrow Thompson High - more commonly known as just plain old “Thompson High” to most of the students. Once inside, she stopped to scan and take in her unfamiliar surroundings, all the while trying not to get trampled by the swarms of students passing by.

Everything was so different than what she was used to. At her old school, she would’ve been strutting down the hallway with her head held high, usually accompanied by a friend or two - or in some cases, an entire group of friends. She would’ve stopped to chat with smiling bystanders before being greeted by the school’s Headmistress, and then she would’ve spent the rest of the day in class or hanging out with friends.

Today? She was alone. Completely and utterly alone. Her hands shook nervously as she made her way down the crowded halls, trying desperately to avoid any of the confused stares she was receiving from other students. She knew they were probably just trying to identify her, but still… it did put the pressure on.

As Casey continued to trudge down the hallway in search of the main office, she passed a familiar (though, she couldn’t really understand why he was so familiar) figure leaning against a set of lockers. He was a boy around her age - maybe a little older - with shaggy brown hair and gorgeous brown eyes, though the fact that he was, at that particular moment in time, smoking a cigarette (after all, wasn’t smoking inside a public learning institution illegal?) was a major turn-off. He didn’t look like he cared, though. His entire demeanor screamed confidence, and she found it very difficult to look away.

The boy looked like some kind of Greek God, and apart from the smoking thing, she couldn’t find a single flaw on him. It was almost as if he were sculpted out of perfection or something.

After what seemed like eternity, she eventually managed to tear her eyes away from the boy and continued down the hall. When she found the main office, she stepped inside and slowly approached the secretary, who was currently busy talking (or gossiping… whichever the case) on the phone and shuffling through countless documents. When Casey finally reached her desk, she glanced up.

“I know, I know. Could you hold, please? Thank you.” The secretary pressed the ‘hold’ button and placed the phone down before raising a stern eyebrow at Casey. “Can I help you?”

“Yes, I’m Casey McDonald. It’s my first day and I need to pick up my schedule and locker?” Casey told her, adjusting her purse over her shoulder.

The secretary nodded and started to rummage through a few envelopes before pulling out one with Casey’s name on it. She then extended it towards her.

“Everything you need is in here.” She said.

“Thank you.” Casey replied, before turning and exiting the office.

After a few wrong turns, she finally found her locker, which happened to be in the middle of a bunch of jocks, throwing footballs back and forth to each other, chanting team slogans and such. By the time she actually made it to her locker door, she had almost been hit three or four times with a football, and whistled at. However, there had been one guy, very good looking, that had just seemed to watch her walking through. Casey wasn't going to lie, he’d been very cute. She'd heard the others call him ‘Captain’.

‘Great Casey,’ she thought, ‘That's the last thing you need. To crush on the football Captain on your first day in a new school.’

She practiced opening her lock a few times. She had an outstanding memory. It only took her twice and she'd never have to read the combination off the paper again.

“You must be new here.” Came a voice from beside her.

Casey turned to glance at the voice that had spoken to her, and smiled.

“Yeah, I am.” She was excited to finally be making conversation. “I'm Casey.”

“Emily.” The girl responded. She was petite, with beautiful curly hair, and a wonderful, friendly, and warming smile. “Sorry, I noticed that you nearly got smacked with a football. I wanted to warn you that it happens everyday, so to be careful.”

Casey smiled. “Yeah, it’s okay. The good thing is I didn’t actually get hit. Being as it’s my first day, I might have crawled in a hole and died."

Emily gave a laugh, as her new friend bent down to examine a dent towards the bottom of the locker.

That's when he came walking their way.

Casey heard Emily take a deep breath and hold it in, and she glanced up at her to see what was going on, and noticed her eyes were glued to something down the hallway. She turned to see what the hype was about, and her eyes laid solely on a boy. The same familiar boy she had watched from a distance at his locker this morning. He was still puffing on a cigarette as he passed by them. He was also being followed by the same group that had been surrounding him earlier.

Casey stood up and watched him pass by all the lockers. The footballs had stopped being passed back and forth as he passed. And everyone just stood, watching him go. It was as if everyone’s life had stopped for a moment, and someone almighty had graced it for a split second.

It was still bothering her, so she had to ask, “Can't he get in trouble for smoking in the halls?”

Emily nodded.

“He gets in trouble daily for that. But he doesn't care.” She paused for a second before adding, “Derek Venturi does what he wants.”

“Derek.” Casey repeated. So that was his name.

“Yeah.” Emily said in an almost dreamy voice. “But anyways, what’s your first class of the day? Maybe I can walk you there?”

“Oh, sure.” Casey said. “Thanks.” She held out her schedule for Emily.

“English Literature...” Emily read, “Can't say that the class is any fun. But the teacher is awesome.”

Casey nodded. “Well I love Literature. So it looks like I’ll fit right in there.”

Emily laughed. “Indeed. Let's go.”

After Emily walked Casey to her class, she turned to face her. “Casey, listen, if you want to meet back up at the lockers after third period, we can go to lunch together. I can introduce you to a few more people.”

Casey smiled. “Sure, that would be great.” She gave a slight wave to Emily and headed into her first class.

She settled in one of the back corners of the room. She didn’t feel quite confident enough yet to sit towards the front. She watched as other students shuffled into the classroom, including the football Captain. She held her breath as he walked over to her side of the room, but settled into one of the seats more towards the front with a couple of his buddies, and a couple cheerleaders soon joined as well. Still, Casey couldn’t stop gazing at him. The bell rang and the Captain himself turned around to look towards the back of the room, probably to see who else was there that morning, and his gaze met hers.

He smiled towards her, and Casey felt herself blushing. She seen him hold his hands up to his friends and stand up from his seat, making his way towards her. She glanced down. He couldn't see her blushing! What would she say to him? Why was he coming back there anyway?

“So... You’re new here.”

Casey glanced up slowly, and mustered up the best smile she could, nodding frantically.

The boy smiled in return as he took one of his hands from his pocket and extended it to her, “I'm Max.”

Casey gazed at his hand, before reaching out to take it, “Casey.”

“Well it’s nice to meet you, Casey. Welcome to Thompson High.” Max held her hand for a moment, “If you need anything you can let me know, okay?”

Casey smiled. She couldn't hide the blushing, “Okay. Thank you.”

Max smiled in return and was still holding onto her hand when a group of noisy individuals piled into the classroom. Casey tore her gaze off of him and looked to the side, while he looked over his shoulder and rolled his eyes.

The were acting like animals. They exchanged a few hand gestures and took their seats in the other back corner of the classroom.

Max turned his head back to Casey.

“No matter what, don’t let that group intimidate you. Alright?”

Casey nodded and smiled, as Max winked at her, released her hand, and headed back to his own seat.

She looked back over towards the group that had just entered, and her gaze, yet again, fell upon the boy… Derek, wasn’t it? He had his arms crossed over his chest, and his feet propped up on the desk in front of him. As she watched him, his eyes also scanned over to her. Their gazes met and locked. And they didn’t move until the teacher came in and began the lecture.

“Well class, we have a new student today.” She said, picking up her clipboard. “Who would like to show Casey around the school?”

Casey's eyes glanced over at Derek, but once again she was quickly forced to look away when Max raised up his hand.

“I will, Ms. Campbell.”

“How thoughtful of you, Max. Very well.” Ms. Campbell replied.

Casey stood up with her purse. Max grabbed his things as well, and together they left the classroom.

X

Derek Venturi couldn’t help but scowl as he watched the new girl leave the class with his arch nemesis.

“Wow, the new girl is pretty hot.” One of his friends commented.

“Yeah, no kidding. I’d like to-”

“How about you just shut up?” Derek snapped. He unfolded his arms and hunched over in his chair. Sometimes his friends could be so annoying.

Both of them fell silent and turned in their chairs when they noticed he was glaring at them. Derek would have normally made a comment right along with them. What had that been about?

‘Casey.’ Derek thought to himself as he shifted in her seat.

So that was her name.

X

Steph’s Note: I know this part was a bit short also like the prologue, but this chapter I wanted mainly to express the idea of Casey being in a new place, and just how out of the ordinary and different this school is for her so far. From the people, to the way things are run, to the disorganization of the cliques and society. Something that she wasn't used to in her old school. Hope you all enjoyed!

Miranda’s Note: I like how this chapter turned out… hopefully you guys did too!

Devil’s Twist
First Words

Casey's mind was jumbled with countless thoughts as she stumbled to her feet. How could she be so clumsy? And why was he smirking at her in such a manner? She spared a glance at Emily for support, but noticed that that was going to be no help at all. Her new found friend at the school still had her eyes glued to the boy standing in front of them arrogantly, his arms folded across his chest.

She glanced towards the ground, biting her lower lip. She supposed a simple apology would do. Though, with the rep she'd heard this guy had, she wasn't sure he wouldn't demand blood instead.

“I'm sor-” She started, but beefore she could get out her entire amends, a thick cloud of smoke surrounded her face, and she choked abruptly. Honestly how could he smoke those ghastly cigarettes?

She squinted her burning eyes into the best glare she could, and directed it towards him. He was still smirking. What a jerk.

“What was that? I didn't hear you.” Derek edged, leaning down towards her with his hand behind his ear.

Casey stepped back, and waved a frustrated hand in front of her face, including the area surrounding her head, trying to detour the toxic smoke away from her. “Do you mind?”

Derek rolled his eyes, before reluctantly dropping his cigarette to the ground and crushing it beneath his shoe. Honestly, it was annoying that he was being forced to put out his cigarette. After all, it was her own fault she had a weak set of lungs. On the other hand, why risk losing a situation so amusing? This girl was very intriguing.

Emily almost gasped when she watched Derek put his cigarette out. He never adjusted his own needs so someone else would be comfortable. He was usually very pompous and self-absorbed.

“God.” Casey choked a few more times before turning her eyes towards him again. “Don't you know those things will kill you? How can you stand it?” She paused and coughed again. “And that smell is just simply-”

“Wasn't there something you were in the middle of saying earlier?” Derek interrupted her promptly, growing quickly tired of the fact that she was trying to lecture him about the hazards of smoking. After all, it wasn’t as if he hadn’t heard it all before.

“Well I was going to say that I was sor-“

Casey was once again cut off, and their eyes darted towards the ceiling, where the bell for class sounded. She shared a panicked glance with Emily, before glaring towards Derek once again.

“Now look what you’ve done! You’ve made me late for class!” She snapped. “And it’s only my first day!”

“Come on, Casey!” Emily grabbed her hand and the two girls darted off down the hallway, leaving Derek standing there with a semi-dumbfounded look on his face.

X

After they’d rounded the corner, Emily skidded to a stop and whirled around, grasping Casey’s shoulders.

“Casey, are you insane? Do you know what you just did? How could you have possibly talked like that to Derek Venturi?”

Casey narrowed her eyes slightly.

“What do you mean ‘talk to him like that’? Emily, that jerk was nothing but rude to me!”

“You are the one that ran into him, Casey.” Emily reminded her, causing Casey to sigh under her breath.

“I know that.” She admitted. “But I’ll talk to him again later. Right now, we’re late!”

“Right.” Emily nodded, and they continued towards their class, “But you know, it’s strange he didn’t seem to mind that you had an attitude with him.”

Casey took her statement into consideration but was still more worried about the fact that she was late for class.

X

Much to Casey’s dismay, her punishment was detention after school that Friday.

Just great. She’d already gotten a strike against her at a brand new school.

On the other hand, her mother had been more than understanding, although, Casey had felt that she should have been a little harder on her. Normally she would have been too, but she supposed her mom still felt bad for forcing this move on her.

It was so not fair that she had already made a screw up on her first day, and it had been all she could think about since it had happened. In fact, she had suspected Emily might have managed to get slightly annoyed as she had been rambling on about it. Which was also not a good thing to do on first days. Irritate the first friend she’d managed to make.

Her eyes shifted at her computer screen, as she placed her fingers on her keyboard and typed a few things into her Online Blog. She had managed to type a short story already about her first day at school, that she was certain would bore people to death when they read it. Still, she had promised all her old friends she would keep them updated through her Blog. She had explained all about meeting Emily, meeting the hot football Captain, being late for class and running into… what was his name again? Oh. Right. The “infamous” Derek Venturi.

Her brow furrowed into several struggled expressions on what she could possibly have to say about him. Though, it didn’t take long for her to start clicking the keys.

‘Just what is so great about this guy anyway? All people did around him was stare and gasp, and almost shudder in his presence as if they weren’t worthy enough to be standing in it.’

She stopped typing at this. She really didn’t know enough about him to make any assumptions, so she finished the paragraph with, ‘I still owe him a proper apology. Don’t worry. You haven’t heard the last about him, I’m sure.’

She sat back into her seat as a soft knocking came to her door. Great. It was the parental unit.

“Yes?” She asked, trying not to sound irritated or annoyed. She really hadn’t been able to shake her attitude off all day, and didn’t mean to be taking it out on anyone else, although she knew it would be no use trying to stop that from happening.

Her mom peeked her head through the crack of her door.

“Casey, hun, would you like to go out for dinner tonight? One of the neighbors has asked me to go…” She smiled a bit. “I guess as a welcome to the neighborhood.”

Casey actually managed to muster a smile for her mom. At least she was fitting right in. “No mom, but you go ahead.”

“Are you sure?” Nora asked again. It was one thing that Casey had been made to move here. Now she had already had a first horrible day at school. She didn’t want anything else to upset her daughter.

“Yes, I’m fine. I’m just going to read for a while.” Casey replied, before adding, “I also still need to finish reading up on the curriculum for school.”

Nora looked hesitant still, but gave in none the less. She didn’t want to pry too much, “Alright dear. Well, call if you need anything. I’ll have my cell.”

Casey nodded and her mom disappeared from her doorway, softly clicking the door shut behind her. Her mother’s steps slowly faded down the hallway, and Casey spun back around towards her computer screen.

‘And no surprise here. My mother, the Social Butterfly, has already been invited out for dinner. I’m glad she’s already made a friend. Make sure to check back in a couple days, I’ll be writing again.’

She submitted the Blog to post, and sighed. Her messenger was empty. She had hoped Lizzie would be on that night, but it seemed as if Caroline was keeping her occupied.

She sighed. She felt sorry for her sister. She knew how cruel and unfair Caroline could be sometimes, and Casey made a mental note to invite Lizzie over for a visit soon - to get away from the evil step-mother.

She signed out, stood up, and grabbed her book from the edge of her bed before heading down towards the front porch. She loved to read, especially outside in the cool air. There was nothing more relaxing. She noticed their car was still there. Her mom must have carpooled to the restaurant. It made sense. They were new here and she was sure her mother would have gotten lost trying to find her way around.

As she sat down and opened her book, a small speckle of orange light caught her eye. She glanced across the street, and recognized Derek Venturi almost immediately. He was leaning against the streetlight smoking a cigarette, and his stance implied that he was angry or troubled by something.

She found it difficult to tear her gaze away and didn’t know why, but it was frustrating. She had a book to read, and, well, it wasn’t going to read itself. The next second sent her heart into panic though, as Derek’s piercing gaze shot up to meet hers, and she quickly glanced down at her book. It was too late, though - he’d already caught her staring.

Still, she felt her gaze lingering back up in his direction, only to discover that he was no longer there. She sighed, and flopped back into the chair. No sooner had her pounding heart calmed down, however, that a voice called out to her, startling her and causing her to drop her book.

“How could reading possibly be that much fun? I mean, really, you’ve done this for two nights in a row already.”

She glared towards the figure who had just picked up her book from the ground. It was him.

Casey snatched the book out of Derek’s grip.

He had some nerve to already be making fun of her for her hobby.

“Maybe I just like reading, thank you.”

Derek grinned smugly, and pushed his hands into his pockets.

“Well we can save that argument for later.” He gave her a sidelong glance and smirked. “I believe you owe me something.”
