An interesting challenge? Let's see what horrors can be elicited from this one:
ONCE UPON A TIME
Best of luck!

Only had chance to add the new challenge this morning. This evening - hopefully - I'll get chance to go through the Elephant / Afraid clues. Apologies for the delay with these, which are down to two factors; being away for the Easter break, and an odd phenomenon on my home PC - following the clue-writing contest links actually takes me to entirely the wrong forum! Crazy but true. A long time ago I began to set up a forum for the raceway photography, and abandoned it. Somehow, the server host (BestFreeForums, which is frankly rubbish) has managed to re-write the Times COD clue-writing thread links so I get sent to the non-active raceway forum. Yet this problem doesn't exist on my work PC. Baffling! _________________ Start every day with a smile and get it over with. |

OK, so I'm in a particularly sick mood today... here goes less than nothing...
Fairytales often start with ejaculate from the rear after an awkward pounce. (4,4,1,4)

This one, though not risque, comes with an unconditional apology...
Basket of fruit for a quid. I'm hearing that's a fabulous starter (4,4,1,4)

Results will be here later tonight.
This was an unexpectedly difficult one - big and hard, you might say. After a long struggle (admittedly, with no reference works to hand) best I could find was:
Seaman in pants came out nine years ago? (4,4,1,4)
P.O. (Petty Officer) in CAME OUT NINE* ("pants" is anagrind).
Sounds ruder than it is! _________________ Start every day with a smile and get it over with. |

This was a real horror - unexpectedly so. Not surprising there weren't too many entries.
I'd originally placed glheard's clue at the top of the list but, on closer reading, found myself unable to parse the "ON A" segment of the answer. Maybe I'm just being a bit thick?
For now - fingers crossed the above will be better explained - I've gone for penfold_61's:
Maybe Sleeping Beauty's opening for horrible nonce to aim up with huge end (4,4,1,4)
OK, not the smoothest surface in the world but it conjures up all manner of distastefulness. This clue just edged it, I think, over the offering from CycleClips which I particularly liked because it held the "batting for the other side" imagery in both wordplay and def. _________________ Start every day with a smile and get it over with. |

no, it was awkwardly clued, I had originally meant it to be implicit that on was a part of the answer, on reflection I could have made it into an anagram. There are many reasons I'm not a setter, this is three of them. _________________ That's the way the ginger snaps. |
