Recently, a ms_moviebuff23 on IMDB has made a couple of comments regarding her dislike for LWD.
______________________________
No offense, but I can understand why they may not like this show.. because of the low ratings and it's costing them money to keep it on the network.. not just because of it being from Canada. I think this show is boring (there's a few good episodes I've seen, but for most.. they are boring.) No offense again, but this show needs to end the scenes taking place in their family home and inside school.
There hasn't been any change in it. I think this show would be better (with the ratings) if they added more variety. New characters too.. and this is coming from an adult point of view. I still love watching the Disney channel and notice how much the Disney shows have changed.. would be nice to see some change on the channel once in awhile..
My Response?
The show has higher ratings than you may think. It was listed in USA Today a while back as one of the top 10 tween shows currently airing. It has also made a few weekly lists for Nielsen's Ratings.
The complaint about lack of scenery is shared with many fans, although the show has branched out since the first season. (Smelly Nelly's, driving test field, car dealership, middle school lunchroom, the family garage, and a hotel room (in the future), etc.) Now, if only they'd give us a full outdoor scene.
In my opinion, the show has plenty of characters already. (McDonald-Venturis + Emily, Sheldon, Sam, Ralph, Max, Sally, Noel, Tinker, Kendra, Jamie, Michelle) While many of these only serve a short amount of time due to a "relationship" status, they do add to the LWD community.
It's interesting that you note being an adult. Most of the online LWD fandom consists of either older teenagers or young adults (with an older adult here and there). (This grows especially true for the Dasey fandom.)
Her Response to Me?
Wow, I'm surprised. Yeah, I can understand how this show can be successful with the older and younger generation.. I just wanted to point out those things that may have been bugging the network. I've been waiting for them to go vacation somewhere.. anywhere! Like go fishing.. go camping, etc. or move! Just to leave the school and home for once! They have been growing up, which is a good thing.. one of the characters trying to get into college. Good... finally, it's been how many years since this show's been on?! I just get annoyed when they are wasting their money away like that on a show that doesn't continue to grow.. I can see they are starting to head in that direction, I am hoping it'll go a little more faster with those changes.
That's good I'm not the only one who noticed the same filming locations either!! LOL especially knowing how long this show's been on the air now.
The only thing I like about the show, I guess really is some of the younger characters.. like the young siblings.. that's about it.. really. They're cute to watch. I liked how they were so mischievous at the beginning!
I think Derek is very annoying and the background music is too! The music doesn't change either..
I've watched so many other shows that are much better than this show! So, I guess you can say, I'm not really a fan of Life With Derek. I mean I can still give it a chance and see if it continues to progress and improve, but I've never really been a fan since it came on the air.
______________________________
In the beginning, this person's opinions didn't bother me so much. I could dismiss her "low ratings" argument, and note how even the fans notice the lack of scenery.
But her last response? Has me slightly annoyed. For one, she dislikes Derek. Now, Derek has his ways, but he's has a soft side, that makes him quite lovable. And, I'd much rather have cheesy sound effects than a laughtrack. (This also leads me to believe she didn't care for early 2000s Disney shows like "Even Stevens" and "Lizzie McGuire" that used similar effects.)
And if she doesn't care for the Derek/Casey storylines, then she is missing a large chunk of the "growth" of the show. While I do love Lizzie, Edwin, and Marti ... their character growth isn't highlighted as much.
I just don't understand why "more sets" means a better show and growth. I think the storylines are more important.
Discuss.

They're cute....to watch?
Wow. Just. Wow.

If Derek is annoying, than why even watch the show? It IS called Life with Derek. Not life with Lizzie.
And what other shows are better on DC? Hannah Montanna? Jesus. I'd rather watch Barney.
I also totally agree with you on the music thing, the only time I can ever deal with those godawful laugh tracks is when Im watching That 70's Show.
Great argument though! I love how professional you sounded, where as the other girl/guy sound like 10yr old Myspacer. _________________ Youtube. Dasey Online. Bitch&jerk
So, you are saying this 'adult' likes to watch the younger kids? She/he says they're cute to watch? Sounds like pedophilia to me. Sure, they're adorable to see on the TV and everything, but that's the only reason she/he watches the show? Now, that's creepy.
How can she not like Derek? Everyone likes Derek. Especially Casey, even though she hasn't admit it yet. And I agree: It's called Life with Derek, not Life with Lizzie.
I'm rather annoyed with this person. _________________ Karissa

I miss Naturally Sadie and Lizzie McGuire, I liked them soo much.
Notice that all three shows, (Lizzie, Sadie, Derek), are normal (don't have a laugh track) and have the "place"? (Lizzie's animated version; Sadie's scrapbook thing; blue screen in LWD)
I dunno.
But I thought you made great points!
Why watch Life With Derek if you don't like, well....DEREK! _________________ Dasey is love.

Rocketman is made of win. He should have a HSM spinoff only of him. I would watch it.
I think too, Derek is growing as a person. So it's funny she doesn't like him, since he's shown almost the *most* character growth. In the first season, he was really really mean to Casey. I thought one of the epitomes of that was The Party, where he wrestles with Casey and makes her fall for his sob story. But then he's come a long way. He's helped her a lot! There's Grade A Cheater, Make No Prom-ises, Home Movies, Summer School Blues, Don't Take a Tip From Me, Very Derekus Christmas. And he's let her help him a lot too, in Driving Lessons, sort of in Adios Derek, Summer School Blues, The Bully Brothers, Derek's School of Dating and [spoilers] Open Mic Plight [/spoilers]
AND they've worked together in Home Movies, Don't Take a Tip From Me, Summer School Blues, TTGBITN, and [spoilers] Open Mic Plight [/spoilers]. So seriously, he's grown a lot and has accepted Casey's presence in his life. How is that not character growth?
I, of course, disagree with her (seeing as I'm on this forum, and LWD is definitely my favorite "kid show" to watch lol) But, let's remain objective people:
Daseyislife wrote:

That's a bit harsh. As a 20 year old "(young)adult" and as someone who knows other adults even up to their mid 30's who sometimes enjoy watching "kid's shows", I think that's a bit rude to call her a pedophile.

Well, I watched Dawson's Creek even though I couldn't stand Dawson. In fact, I hated his character. But I still watched the show anyways, because sometimes other characters (other than the main character) draw you into a show.
****
As for her "growth" claim. I'd have to disagree. She seems to forget that it is indeed a comedy kid show where "character development" is not very common. I loved Lizzie McGuire, but it always bothered me when she would make some realization that Gordo was in love with her...and then the next episode it would be like she completely forgot.
But with LWD, I actually think they've been great (compared with other Disney shows) about continuity and development to an extent.
Then again, let's remember...everyone has different opinions. If she doesn't like Life With Derek or the character of Derek then that's her right. Let's not go around calling her a pedophile lol

^ When it came to "Lizzie McGuire," many fans joked about Lizzie's horrible memory. (She found out Gordo likes her in "Clueless," but forgot in the movie. But again, there were many problems with the movie. *coughs*popstarstoryline*coughs*)
And despite the show being named "Lizzie McGuire," she was my least favorite character. I was always a Gordo girl, and I enjoyed Miranda and a lot of the other characters.
I could say the same for "Hannah Montana."
But those aren't shows that have a ton of character growth given to the main character. (I think Miranda and Gordo were given more pivotal episodes when it came to growth.) They learn a lesson, then forget it the next day.
Like you said, LWD actually does quite well most of the time with character growth. (AVDC is an exception, oh vey!) Season 1 Derek and Season 3 Derek are quite different when compared. I think it's why I actually really like his character. (I like Casey's too, even though her Season 3 personality annoyed me at times. Again, it connects to their character growth.)
I mainly am just annoyed at her opinion at how the show "hasn't grown," when it clearly has, whether it be the filming, or the storylines/characters. Her comment about "wasting money" threw me too. Maybe she's under the impression that LWD has the same budget as other Disney shows? _________________
LOL Yeah, Lizzie McGuire was really horrible with that whole memory thing. I was always a Gordo girl too

I think that probably is the case. Plus, I get the impression that she's more of a casual observer of the show (i.e. her kids have it on, and she's casually watching it while she watches the kids and cooks/reads/etc) I can see how it'd be difficult to pick up the subtle growth in the characters and in the relationship between Derek/Casey if you weren't a dedicated viewer.
^ He/She has to be a casual viewer, and I tend to believe they have only seen episodes from the first (maybe second) season, considering their opinion of Derek.
On a random plus side, I just read a good review on Amazon about LWD on the DVD page. A mother noted how her 8 (almost 9) year old recently got hooked onto the show. She "approved" it and is buying the DVD as a Christmas gift. _________________
^ I think it is great that an adult approved of the show. We've seen too many negative reviews from adults.
And I agree that the person with the negitive reviews has to be a casual viewer, how else can you not pick up the growth? Because I have no idea. _________________ http://www.fanfiction.net/~allybooklover6677

Yeah, I completely agree. She would definitely have to be a "casual viewer" if she hasn't noticed the pretty major character growth LWD's got going on. And, you know, it's not just with Casey and Derek, either. Here are some examples:
Sam - He started out with virtually NO personality and now he's completely awesome.
Emily - Oh, Emily. She has grown so much. Seriously. I mean, look at how she used to be with her obsession over Derek. If you pay close attention, she really has grown as a person. She had a relatively serious relationship with Sheldon, which involves commitment and dedication, something which she didn't seem to have in the beginning of the show.
Lizzie - Yes. Lizzie. If I recall correctly, she never really had her extreme opinions regarding the environment and animals until season two.
Marti - Despite the fact that the show apparently passes through the time slot of around a year and she started out as being six years old, Marti turned eight in the season four opener. Her character has changed so much. She's growing up. Yes, she still manipulates with her "cuteness," but she also seems to have more... mature lines of thought.
Sheldon - He started out as just "the annoying guy that everyone loves to hate," but as the show went on, it went more in-depth with his character and revealed some things about him. This could be considered growth.
Also, this thought should be kept in mind: the entirety of Life With Derek, all seasons, has taken place in a little over a year. There's only so much growth you can do in that amount of time. People don't just grow up overnight... or, sometimes, over-year, depending on the circumstances.
Another thing is that each episode only lasts half an hour. How much can you really show in half an hour?? _________________ Shannon/SNN
^ all excellent points! Casey and Derek aren't the only ones with character growth. All the other characters have grown too. And for all that to happen in one year is really good. It shows how much people can mature enough in a year. I like the example of Emily's crush on Derek. She has this crush on Derek for a long time but then after she strs to date Sheldon they grow close and get serious. It's surprising but still cute that Derek's old fan girl can find someone to appreiciate everything about her. (Sheldon is just too awesome!) _________________ http://www.fanfiction.net/~allybooklover6677

A little OT(off Topic), but I think I know what the writers hidden explanation for that is. When Derek and Casey were 15, Marti was 6; when they were 16 she was 7. Now the Christmas episode has opened up a new year for them, so Marti is 8 this year. Or whatever year they're in. Some time had to have passed between Derek's school of dating and Two kisses and One party right?
*Sorry if you've seen this before, I just wanted to post it*

^ That's what I always thought! It makes sense! And if you follow the timeline (that is totally and completly screwed) it still works. Because she says she's six in It's Our Party and that takes place before Valentines (because the Valentine's Day episode is the one after its our party). She turns eight before March break and after christmas of the previous year.
