AN : Something new I've been working on. Let me know what you all think! (Don't worry there's another LWD fanfic in the works!)
Disclaimer : I do not own Harry Potter or any of the characters associated.
Precinct D.A.
Prologue
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Sod off, Ron." Harry spat, glaring pointedly at the smiling boy standing a few feet away from him.
"Oh come off it Harry." Ron replied, still flashing his goofy grin, "You've been hit with far worse curses before."
Harry scoffed and wiped a stray trickle of blood off the corner of his mouth. Ron had some nerve. Actually hitting him with a spell and then smiling about it. Harry had come to despise that grin the several years he'd known Ron. "Whatever." He raised his wand again.
"I'm tired of wand training." Ron mumbled, watching the end of Harry's wand glow with orange, "Let's break for lunch. I'm starving."
Harry looked contemplative of this for a moment, and lowered his wand, but as soon as Ron had turned to head over to a bench, he heard 'Stupify!' and a numbing shock coursed through his body.
Harry smirked at his trembling friend, before following suit over to the bench. He gave Ron a rough pat on the shoulder, "Now, let's break for lunch."
He grabbed his towel and wiped the beads of sweat off of his forehead, before trepsing off to the locker room. After the numbing sensation had worn off of Ron, he mumbled a few select words about Harry's 'cheap shot' and the fact that he 'always had to cast the last spell', before grabbing his own towel and following.
XOXO
Hermione sighed, and set her pen down on the large wooden desk in front of her. She'd just finished signing and dating what had felt like thousands of forms. She took a sip of her latte and smoothed a wrinkle out of her skirt.
The office was very...white. White walls, white blinds, white chairs... Yeah.
She propped her head up on her hand and waited boredly for the return of the owner of the office. She watched a clown fish swim in a circular bowl on a small table at one side of the office, thinking that the fish was indeed a salt water life form, and it wasn't going to last very long in a fresh water bowl.
The sound of the door opening jarred her from her thoughts. Thankfully the owner had returned. "I see you have finished the paper work, Miss Granger."
"Yes." She replied politely with a smile, turning slightly in her chair to face the elderly man who had just entered the office.
He shut the door behind him and sat down in his chair across from her. He gave her a smile, "Very well then. Let me look it over quickly and I'll have one of my officers give you a tour."
He took the stack of papers, and began skimming through them to make sure she'd signed everything. After all, there was alot to sign. Usually people would get restless after the 10th page.
Hermione concentrated on the hustle and bustle noises that were coming from outside the office walls. It was awfully loud, and she jumped, startled, as a loud thud hit one of the blind covered windows. She could see the shadow of two people outside of it. One person was obviously very resistant, while the other had obviously had no problem bashing their head on the window to get them to comply a little better.
She glanced back at the man across from her, obviously who'd been unphased by the rather loud thud, as he finished shuffling through the rest of the papers. He glanced up at her, "I'm pleased to see that you haven't missed one paper."
Hermione gave him a shy but proud glance.
"I've fought to get you here for a while Miss Granger, after I read your resume a couple months ago. It was very impressive." he stood from his chair, and she followed his actions, "I know it will be a pleasure working with you and I look forward to seeing what you do in the Research wing."
"Thank you sir." Hermione replied, extending her hand to shake his.
"Please, call me Dumbledore." he told, before motioning her towards the door.
She grabbed her jacket from the back of it, and followed him out of the office. They stood in the hallway of the large building now.
When she had first showed up at the precinct, it had looked so much smaller than it did now.
Dumbledore was looking up and down the hallway, waiting for a proper candidate to show her around. They stood in silence for a few brief moments, before a red headed boy made his way around the corner, obviously coming from the cafeteria, seeing as he had a hotdog in his hands.
"Ah, Mr. Weasley." Dumbledore addressed, and the boy looked up.
Ron's eyes immediately fell upon the beautiful woman standing with Dumbledore, and nearly dropped his hot dog. He approached the two of them carefully.
"Mr. Weasley," Dumbledore motioned towards Hermione, "This is Miss Granger. She's just been hired for our Head of Research department position."
"How do you do?" Hermione extended her hand towards Ron, who looked shocked at her more than friendly gesture.
"Quite well thanks, and you?" Ron replied politely, a smile on his face as he shook her hand.
"Lovely, thank you." Hermione answered.
"Miss Granger needs a tour of the facility." Dumbledore remarked to Ron, who didn't respond, obviously completely taken by Hermione's beauty.
Dumbledore rolled his eyes, and cleared his throat, destroying Ron from whatever unpure thoughts he was currently experiencing.
Ron looked at Dumbledore, who was wearing a very strict, and stern expression, and immediately loosened up, "Oh, right!" he scratched the back of his head sheepishly.
"Thank you then." Dumbledore replied almost bitterly, quite annoyed with his officer's lack of self control in front of the new girl. "Miss Granger," he turned to her again, "Welcome to DA Precinct, if you need anything, please do not hesitate to let me know."
"Thank you again." Hermione replied, as she watched Dumbledore disappear behind his office door as it closed.
She turned back towards Ron, who had seemingly either thrown out the hot dog, or managed to eat it entirely in one bite. Either way, it was no longer in his hand.
"Come on then." Ron motioned, still bearing a wide grin on his face.
Hermione smiled, and almost wanted to giggle at the red haired boy. He was quite handsome, and his behavior so far had been strange, yet adorable.
After what seemed like hours, they'd managed to cover the entirety of the precinct. Ron had shown her the department in which she'd be working, the laboratory, the training gym, the locker room, the cafeteria, the breifing room, the booking desk, the entrance to the cells (though they had not gone in), and every men and women's restroom.
"The hot dogs go really fast though, so if you want one you'll have to make sure you're early for lunch." Ron was still giving her what he felt like were key tips, "And you should probably bring something comfortable to wear for physical training. I doubt a skirt would get on too well during a session."
"Really? Even the Research Department is required to do physical training?" Hermione asked curiously, as they stopped at a water dispenser somewhere on the third floor.
Ron grabbed one of the paper cups from it, and nodded, "Yes. Dumbledore feels it's a top priority for everyone to attend the sessions. Especially the females."
Hermione just nodded and muttered an 'oh.' She supposed it made sense, "So when is training then?"
"Every other day from 9am - 11am." Ron replied, filling the cup with water, "Unless of course you're on the night shift. They train from 9pm - 11pm. You won't be though."
Hermione glanced around at the various people scuffling through the hallways. The third floor was definately alot more quiet than the first floor.
"Goodness..." Ron's voice trailed off as water spilled out of his mouth all down his front. "Oh, blast." He quickly tried to wipe it off, and Hermione directed her gaze down the hallway.
A beautiful girl was making her way towards them, carrying a clipboard in her arms as she hummed to herself.
"’Ello Ron." she greeted once she was close enough.
Ron went crimson red as he managed a nervous, 'Hello'.
Hermione resisted the urge to smile at Ron's almost panicky response. The girl had turned towards Hermione now, and had formed a questioning glance on her face.
"Oh!" Ron exclaimed, before doing his best to regain his composure, "Hermione, this is Fleur. She works in the Laboratory during night shifts."
Hermione extended her hand to Fleur, "It's nice to meet you."
"Likevise." Fleur responded, shaking Hermione’s hand. "Are you a friend of Ron's?"
Hermione smiled warmly as her hand dropped to her side, "I've actually just got on in the Research Department."
"Oh how vonderful." Fleur replied, beaming a smile at her. “We ‘ave needed help vor a long time. Ever since-“
"Uhm, erm, Fleur?" Ron interrupted before she could say anything else.
“Vat?” Fleur almost snapped, seemingly annoyed with the way Ron had interrupted her.
He scratched the back of his head, but his eyes were shooting all kinds of different directions. Hermione didn’t understand what was happening, glanced at Fleur, who seemed just as confused. In a split second, however, her eyes glazed over in understanding, and she let out a long, “Ohhhhh…”
“Vell I think I ‘ave worked enough overtime for ‘vone day. I vill ‘ave your paper work for you soon Ron.” Fleur had piped in.
Hermione still didn’t understand, however, Ron was nodding, and blushing crimson once again, “Yes, thank you.”
“Nice meeting you.” Fleur flashed another smile at Hermione, before trailing off down the hallway again.
Hermione turned towards Ron, “Ever since what happened?”
“Ever since our uh…” Ron trailed off slightly, as he watched Fleur turn a corner and disappear from sight. He then looked at Hermione, who seemed really curious about what his answer was going to be, and he cleared his throat, finally managing to get rid of his blush and maintain some level of composure, “Ever since our last one quit.”
Hermione wasn’t completely sure she believed him, but it was obvious she wasn’t going to get the truth either, so she nodded, and they headed back down to ground floor.
XOXO
“You wanted to see me, Professor?” Harry asked as he walked into Dumbledore’s office.
Dumbledore, who had been peering down at a file through his half-moon spectacles, glanced up at Harry upon his arrival. “Yes Harry, please have a seat.”
Harry sat down reluctantly, “Look, if this is about what I said to professor Snape this morning, I’m sorry, but he knows I’m not a morning person and decided to push my buttons.”
Dumbledore sighed, “No Harry. This isn’t about what you said to Professor Snape, though I must say he was livid, and it took me ages to get him to leave my office. I’d love if you’d try a little harder to get along with him.”
Harry scoffed and crossed his arms. If the reason he had to come to see Dumbledore wasn’t about Snape, he had no want to even talk about the git. “So why am I in here?”
“Well, I wanted to compliment you on your catch of yet another death eater yesterday.” Dumbledore began, “I think it was most heroic of you and Mr. Weasley to track him down for so long, even though you moved out of our responsibility range.”
Harry said nothing. Dumbledore had already complimented him and Ron both when they’d arrived with the death eater yesterday. It had to be something else.
“Not to mention, it was quite humorous to read about Lucius Malfoy’s reaction to it in the Daily Prophet.” Dumbledore continued.
He noticed that Harry’s expression had not changed. He knew he wasn’t buying it, so he sighed. “Okay Harry, I’m sure you would like a real explanation now.”
“It’d be nice.” Harry replied, shifting in his chair a little.
“Truth be told, I have an assignment for you.” Dumbledore began, “You see, I have hired a new girl, Miss Granger, muggle, as head of the Research department. She’s quite intelligent, and I think that-“
“With all do respect, professor.” Harry interrupted calmly, before raising his voice quite a few notches, “Are you out of your mind?! You brought a muggle into the DA?!”
Dumbledore remained silent. If it was one thing he knew about Harry, it was that when he needed to rant, let him be.
“We’re supposed to be looking for Lord Voldemort, and now you’ve gone off and hired someone who has no idea that magic is even real, has no idea what a ‘death eater’ even is, and might faint if we have to pull our wands out!” Harry vented, “We’re risking everything here!”
He slumped into his chair a little more, and almost sulked. He knew Dumbledore knew what he was doing. Still, though, maybe there was a screw loose up there somewhere.
“If you’re quite finished then Harry.” Dumbledore glanced pointedly at him, and waited as Harry gave him a small nod. He cleared his throat and continued, “Miss Granger may not know of our world, however, still without knowing of it, I can feel she will be of upmost help to all of us. A big help. A bigger help than the previous witch we had working in the department. She’s extremely smart for her age, and I feel if we just do our best to watch what we say around her. Keep all discussions of death eaters and Lord Voldemort quiet when she’s around, then she will prove of great use.” He coughed abruptly and then continued, “It really shouldn’t be hard. We have been living and working among muggles now for a little over a year since the precinct was founded. We haven’t done anything to risk exposure yet. Even with all of you out there making arrests and patrolling the streets!”
Harry scowled. Whatever. He wasn’t in the mood to argue anymore. He’d had a horrible nightmare last night, and had woken up with his scar burning.
“So as I was saying before, I have an assignment for you.”
Harry raised an eyebrow and glared at Dumbledore. He sat up straighter in his seat, a look of dread on his face, “Professor, if you’re going to say what I think you’re going to say, there is no way, absolutely none on Merlin’s green earth, that I am going to work with…”
XOXO
“I cannot believe this shit.” Harry fumed, plunging his hand into the passenger’s side of Ron’s police car.
“Hey hey!” Ron snapped, rushing over to observe the damage, and running his hand over the newly dented area. “I just had the other dent buffed out, can’t you take your anger out on something other than my car?”
Harry scoffed, and flung the door open, having no consideration for Ron when he let out an ‘ouch’ as the door had slammed into him. He flung himself into the seat and slammed the door shut behind him.
Ron mumbled a few choice words as he walked over to the driver’s side and got in. “You know she’s really nice. I don’t see why you’re so angry about it.”
“I’m a wizard, Ron! I’m here to catch Voldemort, not babysit some muggle girl!” Harry snapped in reply, “And why does she have to learn patrol route’s anyway, she’s going to be working the Research department! It’s not like this is anything she needs to know!”
“We’re all here to catch Vol…er…You-Know-Who, Harry.” Ron replied, cringing slightly, “But Dumbledore has never made a stupid decision here yet. We just have to trust that there’s a good reason he hired her.”
“Then why assign her to me?” Harry continued, “Why me?! As if I haven’t got more important things to do with my time other than take her sight seeing!”
Ron sighed. He knew it was no use trying to convince his partner that this girl could benefit them for the better. Not now anyways. He threw his car into reverse as he backed out of the precinct, before shifting to drive and beginning their afternoon patrol route.
“It’s like he doesn’t even care Ron!” Harry kept going, as they pulled out onto a main road, “Like he’s keeping me on the back burner for some reason! I’m the one who survived Voldemort’s killing curse, I’m the one Voldemort wants! I’m the one who knew Voldemort had started hiding out as a muggle!”
After shuddering profusely at the sound of You-Know-Who’s name, Ron sighed. It was going to be a long afternoon. He had developed a sensational way of blocking out Harry’s voice when ranting however, so maybe it wouldn’t be as long as afternoon’s with Harry used to be.
He was relieved when Ginny had called Harry on his cell, taking it as an opportunity to change the subject. Ginny had always seemingly had a calming affect on Harry’s mood. And in Ron’s eyes, anyone who could do that to Harry, deserved some consideration. Even if it was his baby sister.
“So how are things between you and my sister?” Ron asked, as he turned down one of the roads on their route, his eyes glancing around the neighborhood with an alerting glint.
“What are you talking about?” Harry mumbled, his head propped up on his hand as he gazed out the other window.
“You know.” Ron replied, not wanting to be completely blunt at the moment, “I mean –“
“If you’re asking if I’ve snogged her lately the answer is no, Ron.” Harry interrupted, his gaze now turning into a glare, as he continued to face the window.
‘Well you sure do need it.’ Ron thought.
Ginny and Harry had a weird relationship. Sometimes it was clearly obvious they had something going on between them. Other times, it was up in the air. It was confusing to any standby, and when Ron had questioned his sister about it, all she had done was blushed. So he’d become content on settling with ‘who the hell knows.’
“Heard anything from Percy lately?” Harry asked after a few moments of silence.
Ron was happy that he hadn’t brought back up the subject of Hermione again. “No. Still being completely rude to mum and dad.”
He heard Harry ‘hmph’ before things fell silent again.
“Talked to Fred and George this morning though when they were leaving for home. Said they were going to send him a howler at the other precinct.” Ron continued, “Still can’t believe he’d rather work for Lucius than Dumbledore.”
“Yeah well, at this point, I’d be delighted to work for Lucius instead of Dumbledore.” Harry snapped in response.
“Oh come off it Harry. You don’t mean that.” Ron replied, almost annoyingly, “You’re just upset, but you’ll get over it like always.”
But Harry didn’t. Not for the rest of the day.
In fact, Ron had never been more delighted about his shift ending at 7. Their uneventful patrol had ended at 5, and the night shift had started arriving at 6:30.
“So when have you known Harry to not get in a tiff about something though?” George muttered in a yawn, as he put some coins into a vending machine and punched in the number for a chocolate frog.
“Still it’d be nice to have a partner who didn’t have pms everyday.” Ron mumbled back, his head propped up tiredly on his hand as he sat at a table in one of the break rooms.
He was 10 minutes away from being able to clock out, and thought he would never be happier to punch in his time. George joined him across the table.
“Where’s Fred?” Ron asked, glancing around the empty room.
“He’s going over some paper work with Fleur.” George answered, and at the name ‘Fleur’, Ron blushed crimson red, “Though I’m surprised Ginny hasn’t shown up yet. She’s usually earlier than this.”
As if on cue, Ginny sauntered into the break room, yawning loudly as she walked over to one of the drink machines. Her brothers watched her as she ordered a chocolate milk, and made her way to slump in beside them at the table.
“Alright Ron?” she asked, “Boring day?”
Ron scoffed, “That’s an understatement.”
“Apparently Ron’s had to endure Harry’s temper all day.” George filled Ginny in, “Something about being pissed at Dumbledore, as he’s assigned Harry to showing the new girl around for the next couple weeks.”
“New girl?” Ginny immediately sat up straighter, and glanced back at Ron, “Have you met her yet Ron?”
Ron nodded, “Name’s Hermione. She’s the new head of the Research department. Really nice girl. Muggle.”
Ginny pondered this for a few moments. It was as if she and Harry shared the same kind of mental thought connection, “So why has Harry got to show her around for? If she’s Research, patrolling seems like a pointless thing for her to learn.”
Ron shrugged, “Dumbledore wants her to learn it.”
“Oh.” Ginny replied quietly, as she slumped down slightly again.
“Well,” Ron said, yawning again as he glanced at his watch, “I’m sure Dumbledore won’t mind me clocking out five minutes early. It’s been a hell of a day.”
Ron made a motion to get up, and at the same time, more of the night shift had appeared through the break room door to buy drinks and snacks before clocking in for their shifts.
Fleur was one of them. She was joined by Fred, and overheard him mumbling something like ‘Thanks for working during your time off today to get those samples finished for me.’ She had replied with a ‘It vas nothing.’
That would explain why Fleur had been there earlier while he was showing Hermione around. Lucky thing he’d been given the split second opportunity to mouth the word ‘muggle’ to Fleur behind Hermione’s back. Or else, Fleur would have blown the entire secret out of the water.
Dean and Seamus came in seconds later. Dean was soaked and looked rather annoyed, and Seamus was saying something about ‘Lee jinxing the water fountain for Snape, and that he hadn’t meant it to explode on him.’
They were followed by a scowling Harry and a beaming Hagrid. Apparantly Harry’s mood had no affect on the giant.
“Met ‘er a few days ago when I accidentally walked in on ‘er being interviewed by Dumbledore.” Hagrid was saying, “Nice girl.”
“I don’t give a hypogriffs arse.” Harry snapped in reply, as he slammed some money into the vending machine. He retrieved a butter beer seconds later from the shaft at the bottom of it.
Ron slipped out as quick as he could, waving a goodbye to Ginny and George, and hoping not to catch anymore of Harry’s wrath for one day.
Seamus and Dean joined, Fleur, Ginny, Fred, George, and Angelina – who had seemingly snuck in, at the break room table.
“Taught Lee that jinx you know.” Fred smiled proudly, “He really was intending Snape though.”
Dean shot him a glare as he took a large drink of his coffee.
Ginny was watching Harry intently from the table. Hagrid was trying to convince Harry that insulting a hypogriff was never a smart thing to do, even when they weren’t around. She got up from the table, leaving the several conversations that were taking place and walked over to them.
“I don’t have any intentions of-“ Harry had been saying, but stopped his rant abruptly at the sight of the arriving Ginny.
“Hey Harry.” She greeted with a smile before turning to Hagrid, “Hello.”
“Alright then Ginny?” Hagrid greeted in response to her, before leaning down to her ear, “Got ter go an’ find McGonagall. Eh…good luck ter ya.”
Ginny smiled, and Hagrid left the room, muttering to the others at the table that it was just a minute until clock in time, and they groaned, before getting up and walking out of the room.
She faced Harry again, noting that he did look completely unhinged, “Walk me to the time clock?”
Harry seemed to be contemplating his response for a moment, but finally grumbled out a, ‘fine.’
They walked down the hallway quietly together, Harry obviously in an anti-social mood.
“Maybe it won’t be that bad.” Ginny tried.
Upon hearing this, Harry erupted.
“Won’t be that bad?!” Harry bellowed and Ginny cringed slightly at the boom his voice had made, “Maybe?!” he paused for a second and rung his hands through his unruly hair in a stressful manner before rounding on her again, “He’s turned me into a babysitter Ginny!”
Ginny raised an eyebrow, “Harry, don’t you think you’re being a bit over-dramatic about this whole thing? I mean, he’s just asked you to show the girl around so she can learn normal routine.”
Harry didn’t even know how to respond to her this time. In a matter of mere seconds she’d managed to cause his blood to boil. Ginny immediately regretted saying what she had, and tried to lighten the situation, “I don’t think it makes sense either, but what exactly are you so worried for?”
“It’s not worry!” Harry snapped, “It’s the fact that there is no real reason behind any of this! Dumbledore obviously has one, but he didn’t tell me what it was, and I hate it when he does that!”
There was a pause of silence as they stopped in front of the time clock. Harry scanned his card underneath it, and he was officially clocked out for the day. “I feel left in the dark again. And if anything makes me more angry, its feeling left in the dark.”
Ginny scanned her time card, before turning to him and placing her hand on his arm, rubbing it gently, “I know.” She sighed, and let her arm drop to her side among seeing the annoyed expression glaze over his eyes, “But we’ve just got to-“
“Trust Dumbledore?” Harry interrupted, in an irritable tone, “Yeah. Tell me something I haven’t heard a million times before.”
Before Ginny could say anything else, Harry had turned and stormed away from her. He didn’t want to see or talk to anyone else for the rest of the night.
