Warning: Slightly mature themes... at least later on, anyways.

This idea was inspired after I watched JesterDala's fanfic trailer on YouTube. I'll post the video/trailer later and let you guys see for yourself where it's going.

Action and Reaction
Chapter 1

---

“DER-EK!”

An all too familiar shriek echoed loudly throughout the Venturi-McDonald household, rattling windows and threatening to shatter glass as members of the blended family stopped whatever they were doing at that moment to acknowledge, sigh and roll their eyes at the seemingly familiar disruption before returning to their previous activities.

Seconds later, two pairs of feet stampeded down the stairs and into the kitchen, where the majority of the family sat eating breakfast.

“Derek you jerk!” Casey McDonald, who stood at one end of the island clad in nothing but a simple white towel that left very little to the imagination, seethed, glaring venomously at the shaggy-haired teen across from her.

Derek Venturi bit his knuckle in a vain attempt to stifle his laughter as he watched the object of his daily torment search for something to throw at him - something painful that would hurt him, but not necessarily kill him, and even though he was positive that she wouldn’t mind that particular outcome either, he knew she would never do it for fear of inflicting any possible damage on her ridiculously squeaky clean, goody two-shoes rep. He couldn’t help but roll his eyes at this.

Casey eventually settled on the hairbrush she was gripping tightly in her hand as she pulled back her arm and whipped it across the room, just narrowly missing him by half an inch.

“Ow! My eye!”

Unfortunately, he couldn’t say the same for his brother.

“Jeez Case, I know you’re mad and all, but is it really necessary to use poor Edwin as target practice?” He taunted, unable to hide his Cheshire grin.

Casey’s eyes flickered over to her younger step-brother for a split second, who was currently being treated by “Dr. Marti”. After muttering an apology, her gaze shifted back over to Derek, who smirked at her triumphantly.

“I said it once and I’ll say it again, grubbie: Your. Aim. Sucks.” He sneered, “You wouldn’t be able to hit me if - WHOA!”

He barely dodged that one, and to be honest, he wasn’t sure whether to be impressed or worried that Casey’s aim was certainly improving.

“Ow! My other eye!”

Once again, however… he couldn’t speak for his brother.

Casey gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

“Edwin, I am so sorry!” She apologized.

“It’s okay… I mean, I just need them for seeing and functioning properly, but aside from that… it’s all good.”

-(BLUE SCREEN LOVE)-

Casey gapes in shock as Lizzie, dressed in a nurse’s outfit, wheels Edwin over to Dr. Marti on a stretcher. She looks over and finds Derek laughing hysterically in a corner, glares in outrage and crosses her arms in a pouting manner.

-(END BLUE SCREEN LOVE)-

Casey quickly snapped back to reality and narrowed her eyes dangerously at the bane of her existence.

“You know, this is all your fault!” She shouted, pointing an accusing finger at him.

“My fault? Pray tell, Princess, how is this my fault?” For a second, Derek seemed almost outraged that Casey would even think of putting the blame on him, but his expression quickly changed as his lips curled into an amused smirk and he folded his arms across his chest. “Hey, I wasn’t the one who decided to use Edwin as a human target, and quite frankly, I can’t believe you have the… audacity to actually blame ME for this. Isn’t that a little… what’s the word you always use? Oh, right. Immature. I mean, if you can’t even take responsibility for something you clearly did…”

“No, but if you hadn’t -”

“Early morning fight already?” George deadpanned, entering the kitchen with Nora trailing closely behind - both dressed for work. “Why am I not surprised?”

“Because it’s a regular occurrence and happens every morning?” Edwin offered cheekily. Beside him, Lizzie nodded in agreement.

Nora opened her mouth to reprimand him for his smart-alecky(1) behavior, but stopped when she noticed the icepack he was holding against his eye. Scratch that. Eyes.

“Edwin, what happened to you?” She asked.

“You know, that’s a very good question Nora. A question that I’m sure our dear Casey knows the answer to.” Derek announced, ignoring the venomous glare his step-sister was currently sending in his direction before he turned to address her, “Don’t you, Case? C’mon, don’t be shy. I’m sure the ‘rents are just dying to hear about how you brutally attacked poor, defenseless Edwin with your hairbrush for no particular reason at all.”

He was grinning now. That same cocky grin that indicated that he knew he was getting on her nerves. Which he was. It was the same stupid grin that caused Casey’s blood boil and her cheeks flush and her fists clench so tightly that her knuckles turned white. It made her want to slap him, kick him, kill him… perhaps even a combination of all three. It really didn’t matter, just as long as the result wiped that aggravating grin off his face; though she had a feeling that he’d still be grinning like an idiot even in the afterlife because it seemed as though his entire purpose in life was to piss her off.

“Casey?” Her mother’s voice interrupted her thoughts, “Why are you in a towel? Where are your clothes? Go upstairs and get changed - I’m sure the boys don’t want to see that.”

“You know, as much as I would just love to go and get dressed… I can’t.” Casey muttered, wrapping the towel tighter around herself.

Nora’s eyebrows disappeared into her hairline.

“Why’s that?” She asked.

“Why don’t you ask that… that Neanderthal of a step-son of yours?” asked Casey, jerking her head towards Derek. “I mean, it’s his fault I don’t have any clothes to begin with!”

Nora sighed, rubbing her temples before glancing over at the other teen, her immediately feigned innocence.

“Moi?” He asked, motioning to himself. “I’d never! And quite frankly, Nora, I am just… appalled that you would even think that I’d do something like -”

“This is no time for joking around, Derek.” George interrupted, “Casey needs to get ready or you’ll both be late for school, so just tell us where you put her clothes.”

Derek didn’t say anything at first. Instead, he combed his fingers through his unkempt hair, snatched the milk carton out of his brother’s hand - completely disregarding his protests - and downed the rest of it before glancing back up at his father.

“I buried them in the backyard,” he replied casually, shrugging it off as if it were the most normal thing in the world.

No one said anything at first. In fact, it took about ten seconds for the information to settle before…

“You WHAT?” George cried out in disbelief.

“I can’t believe you!” Casey screamed, storming over to him and raising her hand to slap him, but her mother’s voice stopped her.

“Casey, calm down! Go call Emily and see if she can lend you something to wear - for today, at least.”

Casey reluctantly lowered her hand, but continued to glare at Derek for a few more seconds before spinning around on her heel and bounding up the stairs. Meanwhile, George focused his attention on his eldest son.

“I’ll deal with you later… when I can think of a proper punishment.” He said

“Later, as in… tonight? Right after school?” When his father nodded, he opened his mouth to protest, “But it’s Monday - I have hockey practice at three!”

“Well, it looks like you’ll be skipping practice today because we’ll be discussing your punishment. And I swear if you’re not home by the time I get home - you’ll be grounded until you die. Got that?”

Derek rolled his eyes and nodded, before making his way into the living room and plopping down on his recliner to catch the last ten minutes of an old Boy Meets World re-run before he had to go to school.

*

“Thanks so much, Em. You’re a lifesaver!” Casey declared as she emerged from her best friend’s bathroom wearing a plaid skirt and a black and pink t-shirt with a bunch of various slogans and designs on it.

“No problem,” said Emily, “So… did Derek really bury all of your clothes?”

“Yes.” Was the bitter response.

An involuntary shudder traveled up Emily’s spine at her best friend’s icy tone, before a light bulb went off in her head. A small smile tugged at the corners of her lips.

“As terrible as it is… I can think of one good thing that came out of this.”

Casey turned away from the mirror to look at her.

“Oh really?” She asked, arching an eyebrow. “What’s that?”

By this point, Emily found herself grinning from ear-to-ear as she grasped Casey’s shoulders and locked eyes with her.

“Major shopping spree.”

Casey’s eyes immediately lit up.

*

“Well, we made it!” Emily laughed as she and Casey reached their locker, both completely out of breath from running.

Casey giggled and glanced down at her watch.

“And with two minutes to spare.” She added with a grin.

Emily grinned back and pulled out her binders and textbooks before shutting the locker door. Balancing her belongings in one arm, she held out the other to Casey.

“Shall we?”

“We shall.” Casey replied, looping her arm through her best friend’s.

Together, they made their way to their first class of the day, both completely oblivious to the dark eyes watching their retreating backs.

As the first period bell chimed loudly through the halls of Thompson High, Derek couldn’t help but slam his fist into his locker, ignoring the startled looks a group of late students shot in his direction as they scurried on by.

“Damn it.” He cursed.

Next chapter, coming up!

Chapter 2

---

Emily Davis couldn’t help but sigh loudly as she collapsed on the tacky but cool cerise leopard-print sofa just outside the dressing rooms in Garage.

She and Casey had been doing nothing but shopping for the past three and a half hours, and even though Emily loved to shop just as much as the next girl - in fact, one could say that it was her favorite sport - her feet were killing her, she was pretty sure the backs of her heels were starting to form blisters from all the walking, and all she really wanted to do was go home and sleep.

Well, that… or spend some quality time with -

“Em, be honest,” Casey’s meek voice interrupted her train of thought, “Does this dress make me look fat?”

Emily fought the urge to roll her eyes at her friend.

Please.

That girl couldn’t look fat even if she tried. She could probably wear a garbage bag and make it somehow look good.

Tearing her dark gaze away from the chandelier above her, Emily glanced over and eyed Casey up and down. A pang of envy shot through her for a split second as she watched her best friend crane her head to the side to examine the back of herself in a full-length mirror, murmuring criticisms.

Emily didn’t know what exactly Casey saw when she looked at herself in the mirror every morning, but it certainly couldn’t be what the rest of the world saw. The dress, which was gorgeous light yellow color with thin straps, hugged her model-like frame in all the right places, accentuating all the right curves and made Casey’s brown locks stand out, creating an interesting contrast with her flawless skin.

“Is it that bad?”

Emily looked up and shook her head.

“No. You look great!” She assured her.

Casey nodded, trusting her friend’s fashion expertise, before retreating back into the dressing room. Minutes later, she emerged wearing the same outfit she wore to school that day.

Emily stood up and Casey quickly paid for the dress before the two left the store. They wandered around the mall for a bit before reaching the food court and finding an empty table.

---

They’d been sitting there for a little over ten minutes and by now, the silence between them was beginning to drive Casey up the wall. Bringing her bottle of water to her lips to take a sip, she observed Emily, who didn’t seem to acknowledge her stare at all, and instead continued gazing dreamily around the food court. It annoyed Casey a bit, mostly because was the same look she always had whenever Derek was around, but at the moment, he was no where in sight.

Casey frowned.

“What’s with you lately?” She asked.

It wasn’t her intention to sound so blunt, but that’s how it came out. Emily snapped out of her daze and raised an eyebrow.

“What do you mean?” She asked, tilting her head to the side.

Casey sighed.

“I mean…” She began, “You seem to be really out of it lately - always daydreaming and staring off into the distance. And… I haven’t heard you mention Derek’s name in over a month! So… what’s up with that?”

A faint blush made itself visible on Emily’s face and she quickly averted her gaze from Casey and suddenly found the floor more interesting to look at.

An awkward silence dawned on them for a few minutes before Emily finally glanced up again, a shy smile etched across her face.

“Okay, you really want to know?” She asked.

Casey nodded eagerly.

Emily bit her lip nervously.

“Promise you won’t tell - it’s still a bit of a secret. Neither of us is really ready to go public yet, but we will soon and -”

“Get to the point, Em! The suspense is killing me!”

“Okay, okay!” Emily took a few deep breaths before grinning broadly at her best friend. “I have a boyfriend.”

Casey’s jaw dropped, her hands flying to her mouth.

“Really?” She squealed.

Emily nodded.

“Since when? But more importantly - who is it?” She asked excitedly, eager to know.

“A little over a month… since the end of summer vacation, really… and… okay, first, promise you won’t laugh…”Emily trailed off, sending Casey a worried look.

“I promise.”

Taking another deep breath, Emily stared intently across the table at her clumsy friend.

“Sheldon Shlepper.”

Silence.

That’s all that followed.

Complete and utter… silence.

Then, finally… laughter.

Lots of laughter.

Laughter, snorting, maniacal giggling, the whole shebang.

Emily groaned and buried her face in her hands, glaring heatedly at Casey through the cracks between her fingers, who at this point, was doubled over with laughter.

“Casey! You said you wouldn’t laugh!”

This shut her friend up.

Casey quickly regained her composure and cleared her throat. Emily could tell that she was trying to keep a straight face… it was a futile attempt, however. A small, amused smile kept tugging at the corners of her mouth and occasionally a small giggle would emit from her lips.

“I’m sorry, Em.” Casey apologized, “Really, I am. I just… that was the last person I expected…” Another giggle. “So… out of curiosity… how exactly did this happen? I thought you liked Derek.”

“Oh, I did,” Emily assured her, “It’s just… after that whole incident with you and Sam and Sweden… I guess I finally realized that Derek’s a selfish prick.” There was a pregnant pause before she added, “A hot selfish prick, but a selfish prick nonetheless. If you know what I mean.”

Casey rolled her eyes.

“Of course I do. I live with him, remember?”

Emily stuck out her tongue in a playful manner, before proceeding to explain the rest of her story.

“Basically… it just sort of happened. Over the summer I got a job and it just so happened to be at the same place Sheldon worked at. We hung out a couple of times - he’s actually a pretty decent guy when you get to know him - and then, one day, he just… asked me out.”

“And you said yes?” asked Casey, the disbelief evident in her voice.

“Yep.” Emily replied. “Well… not at first. I turned him down the first couple of times, but he’s very persistent. It’s almost annoying, really.” She shook her head. “Finally, I caved and agreed to go out, and to be honest… I’m glad I did, because behind the creepiness and all those dorky sweater vests lies a true gentleman.”

Casey didn’t know whether to congratulate her friend on overcoming stereotypes and finding a boyfriend or to laugh. She decided to settle on the former, however.

“That’s great!” She beamed.

Emily grinned back.

“I know!”

“So… when do you guys think you’ll go public?”

“Knowing Sheldon… he can’t wait for very much longer. I’m thinking of doing it this Friday or something.” Emily confessed with a shrug.

“What do you plan to do? Something big like announcing it over the P.A system? Cause you know I could always persuade Tinker into talking Lasiter into…” Casey trailed off after noticing Emily’s annoyed look.

“I’ll think of something,” she replied, reaching across the table to steal one of Casey’s fries, “In the meantime… we need to deal with you.”

Casey blinked.

“Me?” She repeated, arching an eyebrow. “What do you mean me?”

“People are starting to talk…” Emily started, “You and Sam have been over for… what? Almost a year, now?”

Casey nodded slowly.

“Yeah… what’s your point?”

“My point is…” Emily went on, “You need to get back into the dating game.”

“I do not! I’m perfectly content with being single.” Casey countered, folding her arms defiantly across her chest.

“And I give you props for that, I really do,” said Emily, “Unfortunately… that’s just not how things roll at Thompson High, and I know you don’t really care about what people think - and, once again, hats off to you for that - but people are starting to talk and… well…” She leaned forward so only Casey could hear, “They’re starting to think that you’re asexual.”

“What!” Casey cried, reeling back in outrage. “How could they… I… all because I haven’t gone out with anyone in a while?”

“Well, that’s partially the reason…” Emily admitted sheepishly. “Do you want to hear the other half?”

“I’d rather not.”

Emily laughed nervously at the cold and bitter tone in her best friend’s voice before glancing down at her watch.

“Hey,” she said, nudging Casey lightly with her foot, “It’s almost six.”

Casey’s head perked up from its resting place on the table.

“Really?” She asked, slowly rising to her feet and gathering her shopping bags, “Wow. Time sure went by fast…”

‘I beg to differ.’ Emily thought as she stood as well.

---

“So, did you and Emily have fun shopping?”

That was the first thing Casey heard as soon as she walked through the door. Glancing over, she spotted the entire family (minus Derek - hence why Edwin was sitting in his recliner) gathered in the living room eating pizza and watching TV. For a split second, she was tempted to ask just where Derek was… that was, until she remembered what he’d done to her wardrobe earlier that day.

“Uh, yeah,” she replied, slipping off her shoes and stepping into the living room. She made her way over to the coffee table and stole a slice of pizza and a styrofoam plate. “Hey, listen… can I eat in my room tonight?”

“Sure, why not?” Was her mother’s only response.

Casey nodded in thanks and made a mad dash up the stairs, and just as she was about to reach her room… a hand shot out and grabbed her wrist, while a second covered her mouth to muffle the startled scream that followed. Before she could comprehend what was going on, she was pinned to the hallway wall that separated hers and Derek’s rooms. After about a minute or so, the hand that prevented her from screaming disappeared, allowing her to speak, but just as she was about to do just that, she heard his voice.

“Just so you know,” Derek’s voice hissed dangerously into her ear, sending unwanted chills up her spine, “I’m now grounded for a month. That means no dates, no TV, no videogames… nothing. All because you can’t handle a simple joke.”

Casey couldn’t help but grimace.

“Is that so.” It was more of a statement than a question. “Well, on the plus side… you won’t be distracted anymore. In fact, you might be able to catch up on all the homework assignments you’ve failed to turn in all semester and even manage to pass a class!”

“You think this is so funny, don’t you?” Derek sneered, his grip on her wrist tightening.

Casey winced involuntarily, but didn’t stop smiling at her captor.

“Yes.” She replied, “I do. Got a problem with that?”

Derek pressed her further into the wall, his grip on her wrist now sending searing pain throughout her hand. He opened his mouth to speak, but a small ‘meep’ cut him off before he could do so.

Jumping away from Casey, he looked over and found Marti standing there, her expression a mix of confusion and fear.

“Smerek…” She began timidly, “What are you doing?”

Derek’s entire persona changed almost immediately.

“Nothing you need to worry about, Smarti,” He assured her, smiling warmly. “Casey and I are just… practicing for our Drama skit. Isn’t that right Casey?”

“Right. Drama skit.”

‘Even though NEITHER of us is taking it this semester…’

Regardless of whether or not it was the truth, Marti seemed to buy it and after giving Derek a hug, she ran off to go play “Hide and Seek” with Daphne. At least, that’s what she said.

Once his little sister was out of earshot, Derek focused his attention back on Casey.

“We’re not done yet. I hope you realize that.” He warned, “You’ve just started a war, Casey McDonald. An epic battle, if you will. And while you might’ve started it, I assure you, sister, that I will be the one to end it. For no one makes a fool out of Derek Venturi. No one!”

With that, Derek whirled around and stormed back into his room - making sure to slam the door to add to the effect.

Meanwhile, Casey wasn’t sure whether to feel threatened or to laugh at Derek’s ridiculous antics.

She decided she’d sleep on it, and with that, she made her way into her room and closed the door behind her.

---

End chapter 2.

Finally! Chapter 3 is up! I hope you guys enjoy!

It's all told from Derek's P.O.V.

---

Chapter 3

---

‘Well… that went well.’

Derek Venturi couldn’t help but grimace as he locked the door behind him and collapsed on his bed.

Seriously though, how much lamer could he get? He could hardly believe the words that had spewed from his mouth just moments before. He was really starting to falter on promising threats, he realized, sliding on his headphones and pressing the PLAY button on his iPod. Immediately, Mika’s “Relax, Take It Easy” began playing. Bobbing his head to the music, Derek leaned against his headboard and closed his eyes.

He thought about earlier that morning and smiled to himself as he envisioned Casey’s long, slender legs wrapped around his waist as she threw her head back and cried out his name in sheer ecstasy.

Of course, he’d be lying if he said Casey wasn’t attractive. She was - more than, in fact. Part of the reason he’d buried her clothes was so that he could see her prancing around in nothing but a towel. She had a body that most girls only DREAMED of having, but hardly ever showed it off because she was too damn conservative for her own good. He would never admit that, though. Not in a million years, for fear of being castrated by every woman currently inhabiting the house - especially her.

He’d also be lying if he said that she WASN’T the reason behind all the wet dreams he’d been having lately. She’d been in every one of them, participating in acts and doing things to him that he knew she would never do. So why did he keep dreaming and fantasizing about her doing those things? He wasn’t sure. All he knew is that it’d been going on much longer than just recently.

When the McDonalds had first moved in, it would only happen about once every month, but as he and Casey interacted more and fought more and got along more… it would happen more often. Pretty soon it was once a week, then three times and now… now it was every night. Every single night and every single time he closed his eyes, all he could picture was her. Her face, her eyes, her lips, her body… everything.

He tried to distract himself too. By dating other girls… by avoiding brunettes with blue eyes - anyone that would remind him of her. Nothing worked, though, and in the end… her face was the only one that he could picture at night.

Emily, Kendra, Sally, Amy… they weren’t good enough. They weren’t her. They couldn’t rile him up like she could. They couldn’t ignite the passion inside of him like she could; the kind of passion that made him both want to kill her and kiss her at the same time.

Derek sighed loudly.

Contrary to her (and everyone else’s) belief, he didn’t just torment her for the sake of tormenting her. He did it so that he could get her attention; so that he would be the only one on her mind at all times. He knew it pissed her off and sometimes he felt bad about it, but most of the time… most of the time, there was nothing more sexy than seeing Casey get so angry that her cheeks would flush red and she’d start screaming at him, or resort to revenge or physically attack him in some manner.

It was borderline masochism, he knew, but he loved it when she touched him. It sent such an electric surge through him and it made him feel things he’d never felt for any girl before.

It wasn’t just looks with Casey either. There was something else… something more. There was a certain… chemistry between them. A kind of chemistry that he’d never felt with anyone before.

That’s when it hit him.

That chemistry he’d been searching for all those years… he’d finally found it.

In none other than Casey McDonald.

---

And that's the end of chapter 3. It was short, but well... I wanted to get Derek's perspective before I went back to Casey's.

W-o-w. WOW. You're now one of my favorite authors like, ever. Please come out with your own novel lol. Seriously though, this is awesome and really in character! Officially in the top of my list for fave LWD fanfics. So, you can go ahead and do what you know we all want you to do now.
