Twigusa kindly judged that my offering was this week's winner so, as it's "winner stays on" these days, it's down to me to choose the next phrase for clueing.
Since I've managed to get 2nd place in the previous two competitions, let's have your entries for:
SILVER MEDAL

This is tougher than it looks. At first glance it's tempting to believe there are all kinds of possibilities and I suppose an absence of easy-to-think-of defs doesn't help. My best so far (but give me a few more days) is:
Rival’s led me when running, so I get this? (6,5)
Not great, but at least there's a bit of &lit in there. _________________ Start every day with a smile and get it over with. |

| I'm beginning to regret setting this one. All I could come up with was a few dodgy anagrams. Shall we scrap this one and start again? |

Definitely not. A challenge is a challenge, however hard, and it's not as if your offering is a jumble of J,Q,Xs and no consonants. In "live" setting, this kind of answer would turn up in a crossword because the setter felt sure it would present good clue ideas. Too late to change it once the grid is complete! Remember the old EXPORT DUTY clue ("Charge traffic cops on departure") in the Times last year? It started the same way - I thought the EXPO bit, offering "exhibition" would be the springboard - instead it turned into a 3-day nightmare of head-scratching.
We have to go with SILVER MEDAL - it is our duty! _________________ Start every day with a smile and get it over with. |

How wrong I was. There are some marvellous entries here. Keep 'em coming, it'd be nice to see some new names having a go.
Here's my dodgy offering:
Reward for second AGM deal to be thrashed out (6,5)

Hmm, I think this can be improved but it's late :) Could maybe use cook as part of the definition and the wordplay.
pirate cook's award for meals served with drivel? (6,5)
Pirate cook = silver
Award = medal

First of all may I offer my congratulations to everybody who took part. It seemed at first that this was a bit of a pig to clue but your fantastic efforts just showed what a bit of grit and determination can do. Thanks for that.
When your vote doesn't count it's easy to pick a winner, but I found it really difficult to decide and my favourite kept changing through the week. So, with apologies to those of you who thought your effort deserved more recognition, here is the verdict from the Lancatrian jury:
1st Anax
Rival’s led me when running, so I get this? (6,5)
Brilliant, smooth surface and, like he said, almost an &lit. Can't be faulted. Mention should go to another of Anax's offerings where he gave the definition of "One decorating second home". I think sneaky definitions are Anax's trademark. This was a beauty
2nd Feathers
Dave Miller's swimming trophy
So simple I had to check with others that it was as brilliant as I thought. Everything summed up in four words - superb.
3rd Penfold_61
Pirate at sea given a large reward for not taking gold (6,5)
Brilliant surface with a well-maintained theme
Thanks again to all participants and over to you Anax |
