Just been looking at recent voting patterns and it strikes me that the number of votes being cast is tailing off, which is disappointing when you consider that the task of creating each one is by no means a 5-minute job.
Should the polls continue? I'd appreciate your opinions.

Having enjoyed and consistently participated in the voting of the Times crossword clue of the day, it is with regret I read of its possible demise. How disappointing that the number of votes cast in no way reflected the overall number of members on the site.
Appreciating how time consuming it must be for you, I can only thank you for attempting to create such an interesting diversion of my time.

Anax,
I regularly vote in the Polls, only abstaining when I feel the puzzle in question had no outstanding clues.
Maybe now is the time to move onto puzzle ratings instead of clue votes. I can see why it must be demoralising to keep this up for the sake of a handful of votes, especially on the "that was the month" threads.
On the puzzle rating issue, maybe you can devise a scoring system like pratting about on ice where points are awarded for technical merit (e.g. knock points off for dodgy homophones, double duty, padding and superfluous words) and artistic impression (smooth surfaces, clever wordplay, penny drop moments, humour etc).

I've been looking at SurveyMonkey and had managed to set up a scoring system very similar to this - you click a 1-5 rating for (I think) five questions concerning the overall quality/enjoyment factor of each puzzle. The initial testing of it seemed to go well. I even put in a test link on the T4TT blog and it worked.
Except it stopped working as soon as I signed out of my SurveyMonkey account - all that the link accesses then is a sign-up page.
Work is ongoing. _________________ Start every day with a smile and get it over with. |
