Yes I know the last one was number 7 but there had been 5 on the original thread so the first numbered challenge should have been 6, not 4, so we're two out.
Anyway, as we've just started keeping chickens in our garden I wanted to reflect that in the word. Also, as nothing tests a setter's ingenuity like a short word I wanted to go for 3 or 4 letters. So, see what you can do with:
COMB

Oh, thanks mate! One of my recent Times ones used the "business storage unit" (CO+MB) element and it took me bloody ages to come up with that. Got to start all over again now.
Looking forward to it, actually. _________________ Start every day with a smile and get it over with. |

Unlucky.
Hopefully there are enough different definitions and possible wordplay elements to elicit a number of different treatments. |

Swine! While you were doing that I was working on another straightforward "first letters" idea:
One of setter's devices, initials used in crosswords on most broadsheets (4)
Still, at least you can't vote for your own.. _________________ Start every day with a smile and get it over with. |

| Just noticed that in my 'initial letter' offering above I had erroneously put in 'Roster' rather than 'Rooster'. Corrected now for what it is worth. |

It looks like this is all we're going to get so I guess it's time to announce the winners.
I was looking for convincing surface, clever wordplay and originality.
This was tough to judge as there were a lot of excellent treatments but nothing that stood head and shoulders above the rest.
Which leaves me with two runners up and a winner:
Runner up 1 : Anax - Business openings for metal buckets? Order mop! (4)
The usual quirky definition from our Anax. Could have been a winner but the surface didn't quite sound 100% feasible.
Runner up 2 : Anax again with Amateur radio hosts honour Hair choreographer (4)
Very clever once again in terms of both the definition and the use of hosts but in terms of surface reading "Amateur radio hosts" sounds slightly awkward and Hair choreographer is probably a bit of a stretch as a def.
And the winner is:
Boxwood with Probe head of board after commission loses objective (4)
Utterly convincing surface which just swung it for me.
Thanks to all who entered, over to you boxwood to set the next challenge. |

Well done Boxwood - much deserved!
And on a personal note, I'd just like to say it's great to get honourable mentions but not top spot; taking part in the challenges is far more satisfying than waiting in the wings! _________________ Start every day with a smile and get it over with. |

Thank you, penfold_61 and anax.
I agree that the taking part is everything, but it is quite satisfying to occasionally eat the sickly icing on top of the cake.
Using penfold_61's numerical formula, we have now reached #011. The word I have chosen is:
YACHT
Good luck to you all |
