Was it just me or did anyone else get the feeling that when Derek shook Casey's hand he was going to pull her to him and hug her? I could see that so clear in my head, I was soo dissapointed when he didn't.

Also, didn't they both look dissapointed when he didn't hug her? I mean, the only reason he didn't hug her was probably because they were in front of too many people.

Oh, and the part where she's asking him what kind of car he wants, for some reason they seemed like a married couple to me then. Probably because my Aunt and Uncle argue about their cars all the time. Razz

I thought so too.

On the other hand, MY theory as to why he didn't hug her is a bit different. You see, if he were to hug her, it would be like him giving into her "feel-good family" moments, which would mean he considers her family... which we don't want, and apparently... neither does Derek.

Because he hearts her. Wink

I agree with Lady Azura's theory, and then there is also the theory that if he hugs her, the whole full-body contact thing will send him over the edge and he'll do something stupid like kiss her or smell her hair or something. I'm accepting of either one; I just wonder what the non-Dasey explanation is for the lack of hugging?

I feel like the writers are kind of holding off on a hug until a big moment, like in the series finale.

And yes, Casey looked crushed that he didn't hug her, and Derek looked like he'd just dodged a bullet.

The almost hugs have become a trademark of their relationship, like they're close to revealing their true feelings but not yet.

It would seem pointless if they had all these almost hug moments to amount up to nothing. They wouldn't build so much tension between the two hugging without some kind of outcome.

Exactly. There's going to be a payoff. It's been building since Crushing the Couch, or you could even say the Pilot when Derek refuses the group hug. The question is, when is the perfect time for them to finally hug?

Not So Sweet Sixteen is a possibility. But I'm not sure.

Not So Sweet Sixteen is a good possibility for a hug to happen. My theory is that Casey will be happy with the outcome of how Derek planned her party and end up hugging him in the "you're so sweet" kind of way. I'm thinking in the kitchen with the doors closed while the party is going on in the next room. Very Happy

I would only imagine it with them being alone because if I'm not mistaken when Casey opened her arms waiting for a hug, Derek almost went in but then backed up saying no. Like he was about to hug her before realizing there were all those people there and he didn't want people to see them getting along. That's probably why she was so upset when he didn't hug her.

That's a good point. I never thought of that. That goes along well with the if he hugs her he'll make a move on her theory, as well as the admitting they're family one....because Derek does care what other people think about him, even though he pretends not to (Sally, Casey, Marti, etc.)

Right, that's what I meant, sorry- it wouldn't be a family hug, that's just the theory of why Derek won't hug her, he doesn't want a Feel-Good Family Moment, and at this point I don't think Casey does either. After all, in Sixteen Sparkplugs she planned the party for him as a friend, not as a sister. So maybe on her birthday he'll do the same (though from the description he might be kind of a jerk at first)
