I know that SLM sold out to another company and that all production has been sent to China/Vietnam. I've heard that no new replacement parts for the old ampegs can be bought anymore.

I have two VL-502's (one of which I'm first owner of and I just bought it last year!) and one VL-1002 as well as some other not Lee Jackson designed Ampeg stuff from around the same time frame. With no new parts avialable will it be possible for a repair guy to fix my amps if something goes wrong?

I love these amps and would be highly disappointed if they couldn't be fixed. I don't know much about repairing amps so I don't know if suitable parts can be bought from other sources or not.

Welcome WarriorV,,,

Like you ,, I have my share of amps setting around,, mostly Crate and Ampeg ,,mainly cause I was there working at the now closed plant for SLM Electronics,,,

Ya,, any good amp tech should be able to get parts ,, and fix most amps,,,as long as its not to serious,, like a power supply transformer,, or the board caught fire and melted in half,, Having schematics is real helpful.

Their are some old shortwave raido,, tube tv techs still around that can preform magic with old tube amps.

The real problem with mass produced amps today ,, either tube or solid state ,, is the quality parts used in the making of todays amps,,they build them cheap as they can.

I have found 30+ year old fender amps at yard sales that still fire up and and sound great,,I got lucky,, cause I don't suggest doing that to an old amp before having it first checked out at a qualified amp tech first,,

Long story short ,, the death of old amps ,, usually come from long periods of not being used ,, mainly,, the capacitors dry up ,,, swell up ,,and sometimes explode,,not usually a major fix,, but i helps to know what was there before.

Keep on aRockin',,,
