I love my GP-1000 but I require more distortion to play extreme metal. I have EMG81 & EMG85 pickups. If anyone can recommend a good distortion-unit for me I'd be grateful. thanks!
Personally I don't find the GP-1000 to require more distortion, but rather a good post-EQing, for metal tones. Unless you're shooting for a supersaturated gain ala 5150s lead channel. A little parametric EQ after the preamp with a boost in the 2.4kHz and a little reduction around 700Hz, and maybe a little low end push around 150Hz will give a lot of impact and attack, without washing out the articulation of the preamps gain structure.
But if more gain is the goal, then a driver or booster pedal is probably the way to go as opposed to a distortion pedal. Something like the Tubescreamer or Lees Gain/Booster pedal. Otherwise you may encounter a lot of excess noise and degradation of the tone.
Thanks for the advice and the eq tips! I will try that out once I acquire a decent eq.
I actually own a Seymor Duncan pickup-booster pedal which offers 26db of clean gain if I remember correctly. It seemed to only add sustain, but not the crunch I am really after - the eq might change the situation though..
