i been playing my 501 through a 2x12 cab w/ vintage 30's at 8 ohms, for some gigs coming p i plan to use a marshall cab i wired at 4 ohms for an old solid state amp i used to play. My question is there any sound difference running at 4 ohms or if i rewired cab for 16 ohms.

Yes,,their is a differnce,,, But you wont be able to tell it ,, unless you got 2 exact setups withan AB switch,,,If you leave the cab wired in 4 ohm ,,be sure and switch the selector to match on the back of the amp ,,

If you wire your cab for 16 ohms ,,and switch the selector to 4 ohms on the back of your amp ,, you can still use the 2x12 cab at the same time,,with the 4x12 ,,,,

hhhmmmm...... would that equal a 12 ohm speaker load then? I never thought about 2 different rated cabs, i suppose they would still get the rating cut in half.

No,, not 12 ohms,,,more like 6 ohms,,or a little less,,and is still safe for your amp to run with the switch on 4 ohms ,,

Most 100 watt stacks,, be it Marshall,,Ampeg,, usually run 2 4x12 cabs,, each being 16 ohms each,, combined they make a 8 ohm load for the amp,,and you set the switch in the back of the amp at 8 ohms,,,add another pair of 4x12 cabs at 16 ohms each,,set the switch at 4 ohms,,
The only time you set the switch on 16 ohms on the back of the amp is when your run a single 16 ohm 4x12 cab,,to acheive the best output volume,,,,,

FYI,,,The Crate BV-300,,,is a Ampeg SVT 300 watt bass head,,with a 3 channel tube preamp section from borrowed designs from Lee Jacksons' early work with the Crate-Ampeg company,,stable at 2 0hms,, can power 8 4x12 cabs,,,

I will have to try that. any suggestions how to brighten this amp up, it seems pretty dark and has a hard time cutting through the mix

Might check your pre amp tubes and try swapping them around ,,or some others from other working amps you may have,,I think Lee says he is using 12ax7EH's ,,more and more ,,, for the high gain and high end,,

I can't imagine that amp not cutting through the mix,,dark or bright,,,
