In response to a comment about Clues in Blue posted on the Times for The Times forum, I thought it best to post this sticky just to allay any fears about why this section of the polls forum came into being.
It is NOT here to offend. The DIY COW part of the forum, where contributors are invited to submit standard cryptic clues, went through a very brief phase where some offerings were of a risqué nature. I should add that they were actually very fine clues, but I was aware that to the unsuspecting visitor they could easily appear offensive.
Given the high quality of those offerings I thought it unfair to dispense with the contest or to start placing restrictions on what types of clue could be submitted. Experience on other forums has shown that a deleted message, however justifiably deleted, can cause all kinds of bother, and we’re here to make friends not enemies.
So I set up Clues in Blue and put it in an entirely different thread with an explicit warning about its content.
The thread exists NOT for the purpose of being “laddish” and offensive. It is there solely as a technical challenge to clue-writers. Given the innocuous nature of words/phrases offered for clueing, I have been truly astounded by the brilliantly inventive work of those who have made contributions.
There must be rules, of course, and I am happy to state for the record that clues which are clearly offensive on grounds of e.g. race or other areas which are patently taboo are strongly discouraged and will be deleted if it’s considered that bounds of decency have been exceeded. There is a clear distinction between “risqué” and “sick” and I’m sure all contributors would concur with and adhere to that.

Well Anax, I'm sure you will also defend my right to say "What a load of Rubbish".

I shall never apologise for only laughing at the topics that PC forces specify as acceptable. But I suppose in the interests of what I've just said, I must defend your right to apologise.

Perhaps if Anon on the other forum would give us a list of what is acceptable to laugh at, and what is not, we could all have a good laugh at that too.

Disgusted, Tunbridge Wells.
