I'm looking for colour (yes, colour) images of the Empire 'boats.

Do YOU have, or know of, any that that you can e-mail to me?

I know of three (only) ever.......but I'm wondering if there are any more.

Also, does anyone have this book:-

Jon E. Krupnick, author of
"Pan American's Pacific Pioneers - the Rest of the Story" has
unearthed THE photo, and published it on page 378. The photo, taken
on Kodak color film, at Pan Am's base, Mechanics Bay, Aukland, New
Zealand, July 18, 1940. The Short S.23 of Tasman Empire Airways,
registered ZK-AMA "Aotearoa" is berthed beside a Pan Am Boeing 314.

Reason being, I would love to see a scan of this one!

Ok, let's see what you can come up with........!!

Thanks everyone.

The simple answer is no, sorry.

But I thought you might like to see some B&W pics that have been hand coloured by the photographer.

Aotearoa

Awarua

There is another version of the Awarua photo on this listing (http://www.airwaveyachts.com.au/Aircraft/c_class.html) - and interestingly it is very differently coloured.

Sorry that these are the best images I have. I tried to buy the original prints but they were with other items and it all got very expensive very quickly.

Above photographs were taken by Leo White, well known in NZ aviation circles, who ran a commercial photography studio known as Whites Aviation from the mid-1930s to mid 1950s. Lots of landscapes as well.
A substantial part of the Whites studio work was the handcolouring of b&w prints.

How about these?

Both rather obviously enhanced.

It beggars belief that there are so few colour photos around when you consider the number of wealthy passengers and spectators around at the time with colour film in their cameras. Not to say official photographers and magazines who should have some on file.

Clutching at straws – could this be from a colour photo?

There is a colour shot of Cooee on Wikipedia (probably one of the ones you've already seen).
Qantas has some colour footage of a C class taking off from Sydney Harbour as well as interior shots and colour footage around the Rose Bay base.

Guess that’s this one?

Would love to see the Qantas footage. Can it be seen anywhere?

Yep that's the one.
As for the colour footage, we're showing some of it in the Flying Boats exhibition here at the Museum of Sydney. Qantas has it among a lot of footage they have collected over the years and it gets included occasionally in in-house compilations that retired volunteers make.

Thanks Matthew. Unfortunately I will not make it in time but hope to visit my brother in Sydney again sometime soon and will certainly have the Museum of Sydney high on my list of priorities. Maybe there will be an opportunity then.

Some pre-war colour footage can be seen on efootage preview clips:-

“Flying from Khartoum to Malakal” 1937 www.efootage.com/play_clip.php?clip_id=14783 (76 secs)

“Smooth landing on the Nile” 1937 www.efootage.com/view_clip.php?clip_id=14784 (52 secs.)

Tribesmen & Plane on the Nile” 1937 www.efootage.com/view_clip.php?clip_id=14788 (1 min 10 secs)

… and others. Poor quality, but well worth a look.

Gorgeous footage, I've never seen this before! What I would give to stand there and watch this today with my digital camera!! Shame we can't put material like this on a cd........without having to spend monies just to watch it....Sad

Thanks for the clips, made my lunchtime"!

Ditto that. Smile That first clip especially. Wonderful but all too brief!
